criteria <strong>of</strong> the study, but the <strong>in</strong>strument was <strong>not</strong> designed to provide diagnoses. The SSPQ<br />

gathers <strong>in</strong>formation about participants‘ history <strong>and</strong> symptoms related to six <strong>of</strong> the<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ard Axis I DSM-IV categories: Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Substance Use<br />

Disorders, Somat<strong>of</strong>orm Disorders, Eat<strong>in</strong>g Disorders, <strong>and</strong> Schizophrenia <strong>and</strong> Other<br />

Psychotic Disorders. Test-retest reliability is adequate (r = .61 for current diagnosis <strong>and</strong> r<br />

= .68 for lifetime diagnosis), reliability is good (based on 84% diagnostic agreement), <strong>and</strong><br />

validity is good based on Cohen‘s Kappa value (κ = .77; Cohen, 1960).<br />

2.2.3. Primary outcome measures<br />

The SHAI (Salkovskis et al., 2002) is an 18-item self-report measure <strong>of</strong> health<br />

anxiety rang<strong>in</strong>g from mild anxiety to hypochondriasis. Sample items <strong>in</strong>clude ―As a rule I<br />

am <strong>not</strong> afraid that I have a serious illness‖, <strong>and</strong> ―If I hear about an illness I <strong>of</strong>ten th<strong>in</strong>k I<br />

have it myself‖ (p. 852). The items are scored from 0 - 3. A total score is calculated <strong>by</strong><br />

summ<strong>in</strong>g the item scores <strong>and</strong> can range from 0 - 54 with higher scores <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g more<br />

severe health anxiety symptoms. Internal consistency is good (α = .89) <strong>and</strong> test-retest<br />

reliability is good (r = .76).<br />

The Multidimensional Inventory <strong>of</strong> Hypochondriacal Traits (MIHT) was created<br />

<strong>by</strong> Longley, Watson, <strong>and</strong> Noyes (2005) <strong>and</strong> it is a new 31-item measure created to<br />

address the shortcom<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> other health anxiety <strong>and</strong> hypochondriasis measures. It<br />

assesses health anxiety on four theoretically-derived <strong>and</strong> structurally-analyzed<br />
