Today, effective cl<strong>in</strong>ically-supported treatments have been established for health<br />

anxiety. Individuals with health anxiety are <strong>of</strong>ten referred to psychological practitioners<br />

when the biomedical health care system can<strong>not</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d medical causes or treatments for<br />

present<strong>in</strong>g symptoms (<strong>Taylor</strong> & <strong>Asmundson</strong>, 2004). R<strong>and</strong>omized controlled studies <strong>and</strong><br />

other research have provided evidence that psychological treatments are efficacious for<br />

health anxiety (see <strong>Taylor</strong> & <strong>Asmundson</strong>, 2004 for review). For example, cognitive<br />

therapies are used to restructure distorted thoughts <strong>and</strong> attributions about physiological<br />

sensations <strong>in</strong>to healthier <strong>and</strong> less catastrophic thoughts. Behavioural techniques such as<br />

graded <strong>in</strong> vivo exposure, desensitization, <strong>and</strong> response prevention, are helpful for<br />

controll<strong>in</strong>g illness related behaviours <strong>and</strong> disability. Methods <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g relaxation<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, bi<strong>of</strong>eedback, <strong>and</strong> behavioural stress management (BSM) help reduce<br />

physiological arousal <strong>and</strong> anxiety. Physiologically-based techniques such as attention<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, distraction methods, hypnosis, or environmental manipulations are useful for<br />

decreas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dividuals‘ attention to their somatic symptoms. Effective treatments for the<br />

social aspects <strong>of</strong> health anxiety may <strong>in</strong>clude physician consultations, the <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>of</strong><br />

significant others <strong>and</strong> family members, <strong>and</strong> the modification <strong>of</strong> environmental situations<br />

that support a client‘s sick role. Accord<strong>in</strong>gly, a multimodal treatment approach may be<br />

needed to address the factors <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the development <strong>and</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>tenance <strong>of</strong> the various<br />

health anxiety symptoms. Many case studies, uncontrolled studies, <strong>and</strong> r<strong>and</strong>omized<br />
