The best way to protect the fetus is to protect themother. When a safety belt is worn properly, it’s morelikely that the fetus won’t be hurt in a crash. Forpregnant women, as for anyone, the key to makingsafety belts effective is wearing them properly.Right Front Passenger PositionTo learn how to wear the right front passenger’s safety beltproperly, see “Driver Position” earlier in this section. The right front passenger’s safety belt works the sameway as the driver’s safety belt -- except for one thing. If you ever pull the shoulder portion of the belt outall the way, you will engage the child restraint lockingfeature. If this happens, just let the belt go back all theway and start again.Air Bag SystemsThis part explains the frontal and side impact airbag systems.Your vehicle has air bags -- a frontal air bag for thedriver and another frontal air bag for the right frontpassenger. Your vehicle may also have side impact airbags -- a side impact air bag for the driver and anotherside impact air bag for the right front passenger. If EquippedIf your vehicle hasside impact air bags, itwill say AIRBAG onthe air bag coveringon the side of thedriver’s and right frontpassenger’s seatbackclosest to the door.Frontal air bags are designed to help reduce the riskof injury from the force of an inflating frontal air bag.But these air bags must inflate very quickly to do theirjob and comply with federal regulations.1-25
