Thus, it is in both her and her baby’sbest interests to avoid developing this condition. While the Institute ofMedicine published guidelines on weight gain in pregnancy in 2009,it stated there was not sufficient evidence to say whether how much awoman gains has an effect on the likelihood of her developing diabetesduring pregnancy. Since then, however, research has shown that womenwho gain weight the slowest (less than a third of a kilogram per week,or just over a half-pound) during their first trimesters have the lowestrisk of gestational diabetes. If you become pregnant you’ll want nothing short of exceptionalprenatal care. We offer complete obstetric and gynecologic servicesincluding pregnancy and childbirth, high-risk pregnancy, menopause, pelvic and women’s surgery and more. Call WISE OBSTETRICS& GYNECOLOGY P.A. at 940-626-8008. Our office is convenientlylocated at 1713 South Fm 51, Ste. 201, Decatur. New patients arewelcome.P.S. While a woman with gestational diabetes usually finds her glucosemetabolism returning to normal after she gives birth, she may run ahigher risk of developing Type-2 diabetes later on.Banking on Successful TherapyAlthough grateful to the therapistsat Sunny Hills Nursing and Rehabwho got her walking again after kneereplacement, 90-year-old Berniece Baileyhas gladly headed home to Chico. She has missed being on the job.Berniece had found getting to FirstState Bank, where she has worked43 years, increasingly difficult. Shedreaded surgery and “had a horror ofgoing to a nursing home.”Then her knee gave way.“I’ve had some bad experiences inmy life, but not being able to walk is asbad as it can get,” she recalled. So following surgery on her leftknee, she underwent rehabilitation atSunny Hills in Decatur.“That experience has changed mymind.,” Berniece freely admitted.“They had me up three days after mysurgery.”Her enjoyment of being with peopleis one reason Berniece has kept workinga couple of decades beyond retirementage. “I may be older than theyare, but I feel close to all of them. Theyare family, too,” she said. That family has grown from fiveemployees who did banking by hand in1967 to the present 62 at First State’sfour computerized offices.Berniece has noticed that samecloseness during rehab. She chose Sunny Hills in part becausea co-worker has a relative who’sbeen on its staff for decades. She hadbeen told a lot about the quality of careavailable.GARY HENDRIX Administrator since 1973940-627-2165 • 201 E. And it reinforcesher belief that “if you are friendlywith people, they will be nice to you.”That friendliness is one thing sheloves about calling Chico her home.Born in Grapevine in 1920 on a cottonfarm now covered by DFW airport, shemoved to Wise County in 1961 whenshe married the late Elbert Bailey.Their children and spouses includedaughter Cyd Bailey of Chico, and sonsDan Wells and his wife, Mononette, ofChico and Marvin Wells and his wife,Dorothy, of North Richland Hills.Berniece has five grandchildrenand 10 great-grandchildren.Cyd now works alongside her afterbeing in banking for three decadesin Decatur. Active in civic work andat Morris Memorial United MethodistChurch, in 2008 they helped theircommunity realize its dream of openingthe Chico Senior Citizens Center. Now Berniece is ready for somerehab at the bank, or as she puts it:“Work is good mental therapy.”For physical therapy, she’ll stickwith Sunny Hills.“It’s amazing what they can do foryou,” Berniece pointed out. “This isa great service, and they deserve forpeople to know about it.”SkilledTherapyBerniece Bailey withphysical therapy assistantPatricia WilliamsIndividualizing Care...ACCEPTING MEDICARE, MEDICAID & PRIVATE PAYALL Medicare Rooms Are Private

According to Medicare data, those whovisited an optometrist at least once a year for an examination were 64 percentless likely to develop dementia. The treatments found to be most helpful inlowering the risk of dementia were surgery to correct cataracts and treatmentsfor glaucoma, retinal disorders, and other eye-related problems. By failingto seek treatment for vision problems, seniors have less chance to engagein many of the activities (reading, playing board games, social networking, walking, and routine exercising) that have been found to lower Alzheimer’s risk.Maintaining an active lifestyle and having routine medical and eye examinationscan lower a person’s risk of developing dementia, which causes loss of memory andmental confusion. A comprehensive eye health examination includes screeningfor glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration. OutdoorTime to prune bush rosesBy NEIL SPERRYDear Neil: My rose bushes look terible. When should I cut them back?Prune bush roses by one-third inearly August to encourage regrowth forfall bloom. Prune them by one-half inmid-February to promote strong, newcanes and maximum spring bloom. In between, do whatever pruning youmust to keep the plants well-groomed.It sounds to me like black spot mighthave hit your plants. Consider switchingover to the Texas A&M EarthKindroses. There are a few more than 20roses, mostly heirloom varieties thathave been identified as being almostbulletproof to climate, soils and diseases.Your nurseryman will know whatyou’re seeking.Dear Neil: I am new to Texas fromSwitzerland, and I’m trying to learnabout gardening here. The March planting hadabout eight tomatoes. The May plantinghas flowers, but theplants have never had fruit.Any suggestions? You must plant spring tomatoesin Texas within twoweeks following the averagedate of your last killingfreeze. Mid-May plantingswill never do well, becauseit turns too hot too quickly.Tomatoes really begin tostruggle when temperaturesclimb above 90 degrees, andlarge-fruiting types are thefirst to go.In most of Texas, you’re doing well toget two weeks’ worth of fruit from varietieslike Big Boy, Beefsteak and BetterBoy (or any other large type). Stickwith small and medium-sized types.Clayton’sCornerGardener’sMailbagThis time of year we always receive calls regardingthe safety of johnsongrass for cattle andhorses. Actually, it’s not just johnsongrass producerswho need to be concerned with. Many sorghum- and sudan-type plants, includingjohnsongrass, can release a poisonous substanceknown as prussic or hydrocyanic acid.Even though we’ve had decent amounts of rainfallthis year, I have still heard reports of some cattledeaths in the area due to prussic acid. Fortunatelyneither local veterinarian I talked to last weekhad treated any cases. There are some losses of cattle almost every year due tograzing on the green plants. Silage and hay can usually befed without problems. The prussic-acid content decreases as the plant approachesmaturity. Small plants, young leaves and tillers are usuallythe highest in prussic acid. In other words, upper leaveswill contain more acid than older lower leaves.Drought-stricken and second-growth plants are dangerousbecause they are small and consist largely of leaves, which are high in prussic acid. Poisoning seems to be lesslikely if animals eat some grain before they are turned intothe pasture. The remedy is an intravenous injection of sodium nitriteand sodium thiosulfate. However, if cattle are grazing contaminatedpastures, death can come quickly. Therefore, ifyou have pastures with johnsongrass present, it is advisableto have a sample sent to the TAMU diagnosticlab before taking an unnecessary risk. The 2010 Ranchers Gathering has been set forTuesday, Aug. 24, at the Decatur Civic Center.Doors will open around 5 p.m. for everyone tovisit booths. 8 ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, August 5, 2010OutdoorSUDOKU SOLUTIONSTime to prune ...Continued from page 7inches. Put 5 or 6 inches oforganic matter on top of thetilled soil (equal amounts ofsphagnum peat moss, compost, rotted manure and pinebark mulch), and rototilldown to that same level toblend everything together. This will give you a plantingbed that’s equal to pottingsoil.Dear Neil: I have severalJapanese yew shrubs thatre 40 years old and 8 feetall. They’ve gotten too large. How severely can I cut themback? When? Since they’reevergreens, will they sproutback out again?Winter is the best timeto prune all evergreens, althoughminor shaping canbe done at other times. (Yourpruning will not be “minor.”)Use lopping shears to pruneyour plants back branch-bybranch.Leave many branchesthat have green needles(leaves) to reenergize theplants. And, always keep in mindthat we remodel houses after40 years, even includingtearing out walls. It’s OKto do that with landscapeplants, too, if you have to.However, old Japanese yewsare treasures. Hopefully, youcan save them.Dear Neil: A friend ofmine in Austin has a Bradfordpear and an apple tree, and both seem to be dyingslowly this summer. It’s beengoing on for some time. Thetrees have been sparse, andthe leaves are now brownand falling. Would this be aninsect or a disease? It’s probably cotton rootrot. That’s a very commonoccurrence with those twoplants in the alkaline blackclay soils that are found eitherside of I-35 throughmost of Texas. Of course, soils in the western 80 percentof Texas are alkaline, sothis fungal disease is likelythere as well. It’s the majorreason Texas grows littlecotton any longer.Cotton root rot also affectsmore than 80 percent of theplant species we grow inour landscapes. Apples andpears lead the pack. Plantsthat are not especially affectedby it include pecans, oaks, cedar elm, magnolias, junipers, nandinas, crapemyrtles and hollies. The Plant Disease DiagnosticLaboratory at TexasA&M could confirm if itwas cotton root rot, but theywould need samples of severalroots ranging from 1/2-inch to 1 inch in diameterand 6-8 inches long.Dear Neil: I’ve had terribleluck with dahlias. I’d nottried them before here. Whatsuggestions might you offer?Dahlias are miserable inTexas’ heat. If you’ve livedin a cool climate, or if youlook at photos from cooler regions, the giant dahlias willmake your mouth water, buthere, they’ll rarely bloom, and if they do, they will bepuny little excuses. Stickwith Texas-friendly typesof plants. At the same time, rejoice that you can growcrape myrtles, lantanas, caladiumsand other tropicalplants that they can’t.Dear Neil: I have two figplants, one of them grownfrom cuttings of a fig broughtfrom Italy by my grandmother. They are both twoyears old, but the Italian figlooks like it’s dead this year. Its stems are bare and brittle, and there are no signs oflife. The other fig is producingpurple figs, but they arehard and dry, even though Iwater every other day. Whatdo I need to know? The Italian fig probablyfroze this past winter, as didmany other figs in Texas. It was quite cold, even farsouth into the state. It wouldhelp to know the variety ofthe second fig. The two thatwe really want to grow hereare Celeste and Texas Everbearing.Others, such as thehigh-quality desert figs fromthe West Coast, do not dowell in Texas. Figs behaveunusually as fruit.Have a question you’dlike Neil to consider? Mailit to him in care of the WiseCounty Messenger, P.O.
