To our Oakwood Volunteers
Oakwood’s patients, families and
communities benefit greatly from your
donations of time and talent – and by
volunteering, your own health benefits, too.
Research conducted by the Corporation for
National and Community Service
demonstrated that volunteers have “greater
longevity, higher functional ability, lower rates
of depression and less incidence of heart
disease.” The sense of purpose, connection
and accomplishment you get from
volunteering go a long way to boosting your
health and wellness.
That’s just one more reason to feel good
about your contributions to Oakwood. Thank
you for all you do, and here’s to your health!
Sincerely,
Shhh!!!...IT’S ‘QUIET TIME’
Quiet Time is an initiative
developed by the OHMC
PACE Team Members. Its
purpose is to provide a daily
period of reduced controllable
noise and daily period without
distractions which benefits
patients, visitors and staff.
The established time frame for
„Quiet Time‟ will be 1:30 to
3:00 pm and will affect all
inpatient units:
(Medical/Surgical, Critical Care, Women and Children). All departments (Inpatient
care units and all Ancillary departments supporting patient care) will participate.
The Process . . .
Patients and family members are informed of “Quiet Time” and what to expect
at the time of admission
Signs regarding QT are posted around patient rooms and in the main lobby
15 minutes prior to QT, the hospital operator will make the following
announcement:
“Good afternoon patients, guests, and staff. It is now time to begin
therapeutic quiet time for our patients to rest, recover and heal. Please
dim the lights and keep the noise level to a minimum. Thank You.”
30 minutes prior to „QT‟, clinical staff will round on all patients: prepare
patients, turn/reposition, toileting, assess for any needs, offer blankets to
make them more comfortable as they try to rest/take a nap.
Observing Quiet Time . . .
Close doors unless patient is high Encourage visitors to leave
risk
Dim the lights and close the blinds Lower voices; move conversations
away from patients‟ rooms
Turn cell phones and pagers to No labs or x-rays, etc. unless
vibrate
absolutely necessary
Refrain from overhead paging Housekeeping chores must be
minimized
Refrain from using unit intercom Observe “quiet heels”
Quiet Time Education and Communication . . .
 Patients, Family Members, Visitors:
Brochures will be included in admission packets and placed in waiting
rooms
Signs will be posted in the main lobby and around patient rooms
Clinical staff will conduct one-on-one teaching with patients and
visitors
All departments and clinical staff will be informed: via weekly line-up, flyers,
Huddles, clinical alerts, and department and staff meetings.
The tentative implementation date for Quiet Time is September 20, 2011.
Oakwood Donates Heart Attack Treatment
Units to Dearborn Fire Department
Oakwood Healthcare System donated five portable 12-lead EKG units to the Dearborn Fire Department, furthering a
commitment to reduce heart attack treatment times throughout the Detroit metro area.
The units, which represent an investment of $165,000 by the healthcare system, are capable of transmitting EKG
information directly to the smart phones of attending physicians, dramatically reducing the treatment times for heart
attack victims. It’s part of a commitment from Oakwood to provide the equipment and training to paramedics
throughout the 500-square-mile area serviced by Oakwood.
“This is a huge commitment, not only to the City of Dearborn, but to the entire region,” said Jeffrey Beutner, Battalion
Chief, Emergency Medical Services for the City of Dearborn. “This is a wonderful thing the hospital has done.”
rather than going to the hospital on their own.
“We’ve consistently seen 30 minutes or less when patients are transported by our agency,” said Beutner.
Healthcare systems rate
the time between the
arrival of heart attack
patients at an emergency
room and when they can
receive an emergency
catherization—it’s referred
to as door-to-balloon time.
The national average is
about 90 minutes. Since the
new technology has been
implemented at the
Oakwood Hospital &
Medical Center (OHMC) in
Dearborn, the average is
about 53 minutes—and far
less if patients are
transported by the
Dearborn Fire Department,
That’s because doctors can make the diagnosis as soon as the information is transmitted to their phones, said Joe
Murray Ph.D., manager of the Critical Care transport Team at Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center.
“By the time the fire department gets to the hospital, our staff is ready to go,” said Murray.
Beutner said the units would find regular use in Dearborn. The four ambulance units in the city respond to about 10,000
calls every year. They go on at least three cardiac runs every day, he said.
The Dearborn Fire Department has used the technology since 2009, according to Beutner. The new units will replace old
ones that have seen plenty of use for the department.
“It’s been a great partnership,” said Dearborn Mayor Jack O’Reilly.
“It’s huge,” said Fire Chief Richard Miller of the donation, which comes at a time when many municipalities are
operating under tight budget conditions. “This is a big help for the department and the community as a whole.”
Volunteer Vibe – 3 rd Quarter Page - 7 -
Michael Geheb, MD, division president of Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center, said the project was a team effort from
the healthcare system, the Oakwood Foundation and the OHMC Guild, volunteers who helped generate donations for
the Lifepak units.
“It’s been a great collaborative effort,” said Geheb.
Murray said Oakwood hopes to provide the equipment and training to departments throughout the healthcare system’s
service area this year. Dearborn has been transmitting ECGs for about two years now, but their current cardiac monitors
are older and rapidly approaching their expiration. The new Life-Pak units in Dearborn will replace machines that are five
years old.
“Oakwood is committed to this process because of the successes we’ve had,” said Murray. “We’re looking forward to
getting everyone on board.”
To: All Patient Care Staff
From: Department of Infection Prevention and Control
Date: 08/30/2011
Re: Clostridium difficile on the rise
The following reminders are proven techniques to reduce the spread of C. diff. (Clostridium difficile (C. diff)
infections.)
Important Reminders:
It is critical that all healthcare workers follow strict hand hygiene and isolation protocols.
We are all partners in patient safety – it is essential to take the time to educate patients, visitors, and even your
colleagues/fellow health care providers on the importance of hand hygiene.
o C. diff is spread by ingestion of bacteria and can infect healthy people. Patients and healthcare personnel are at
risk of C. diff disease, so it is important to be vigilant.
o Encourage patients to wash their hands or to use alcohol hand wipes before eating meals.
o Anyone touching the patient, equipment, or environment can spread C. diff
o If you see someone who has not washed their hands or used alcohol-based hand rub when they should have,
address the situation in a professional and courteous manner.
Examples include:
“Have you remembered to wash your hands?”
“I am requesting that you wash your hands for our patient‟s safety.”
Wash your hands with soap and water immediately after removing gloves when caring for a suspected or confirmed C.
diff patient or touching the patient environment.
o If no clean sink is available in the room, use alcohol hand rub then wash with soap and water as soon as possible.
Do not touch equipment or the environment on the way to a clean sink – this causes C. diff spore contamination.
o Use a clean paper towel to turn off the faucet to keep your hands clean.
Wear gloves and gown to enter the room every time.
o Personal protective equipment must be worn correctly for it to work.
Gowns must be fastened in the back at the waist and neck to prevent contamination of clothing. A recent
Joint Commission survey resulted in a citation for healthcare workers not wearing gowns properly.
Gloves must be pulled over the cuffs of the gown to prevent contamination of clothing and hands.
Use the yellow, disposable stethoscopes for Contact Precautions patients.
o If you must use a non-disposable stethoscope it must be thoroughly disinfected with a bleach wipe upon
exiting the Contact Precautions room.
o The stethoscope must be rubbed with the bleach wipe to create friction and stay wet with bleach for a total of
5 minutes in order to kill the C. diff spores.
Watch for C. diff symptoms in all patients
o Symptoms include more than three (3) episodes of diarrhea a day, abdominal pain, fever, and foul stool odor.
o Recent exposure to antibiotics is frequently a predictor of C. diff-associated diarrhea.
o If you suspect a patient has C. diff, start Contact Precautions immediately.
Like many volunteers, I give my time, talents, and financial support to organizations I believe are making a difference to
those in need.
The Special Events and Fundraising Committee of the Volunteer Council has been discussing the subject of volunteer
financial giving for some time. In fact, it recently came to our attention that we are unable to track the financial support
given to Oakwood by our Oakwood volunteers. Moreover, some of you are solicited a number of times each year for
various giving opportunities within Oakwood.
Accordingly, the Special Events and Fundraising Committee of the Volunteer Council has partnered with the Volunteer
Services Department and the Oakwood Foundation to address these issues. The result is that we will be conducting an
ANNUAL direct mail Oakwood Volunteer Giving Campaign. The campaign will run each year in the fall and align with the
Oakwood Employee Giving Campaign. THIS WILL BE THE ONLY SOLICITATION YOU WILL RECEIVE FROM OAKWOOD ON
AN ANNUAL BASIS.
More information will be coming at the September Volunteer Council Meeting including a full listing of giving options
designed to meet the concerns of our volunteers for specific program areas designated by each site. Your generous
donations will go exactly where you want them to go when you select one of the listed opportunities.
We believe this is a wonderful opportunity for the volunteers of Oakwood to be able to show the extent of their support
and for us to be able to track just how much we really give to the causes we care so deeply about. Please join us in
supporting the new Oakwood Volunteer Giving Campaign.
Best regards,
Oakwood Women's Healthcare Classic
Friday, July 15, 2011 - Women's Healthcare Classic exceeds fundraising goal
Dearborn, Mich. – June – A picture perfect day greeted the more than 200 golfers who gathered “fore” the
19th annual Women’s Healthcare Classic on June 13.
Proudly presented by Drs. Harris, Birkhill, Wang, Songe and Associates, P.C. the Women’s Healthcare Classic
exceeded this year’s goal by generating more than $302,000 to support women’s programs throughout
Oakwood.
“The proceeds from this event significantly help in
responding to the needs of women who might not
otherwise be able to receive programs and services
that could change the
quality of their life,”
said Carla O’Malley,
executive director of
the Oakwood
Foundation.
Those services include:
mammograms and
heart screenings,
finding shelter and
support for victims of
domestic violence and
providing counseling
for a high risk
pregnancy. A portion of
proceeds will be
directed to the
endowment for needy women’s programs, too.
Oakwood was delighted to have Guy Gordon and
Ashlee Baracy of WDIV Channel 4 emceeing the
programs and sharing stories at the Dearborn
CUTLINE: David Yates, MD, of Title Sponsor Drs. Harris, Birkhill, Wang,
Country Club and the Tournament Players Club.
Local singing sensation Karen Newman got things
going with a rousing rendition of the National
Anthem and Judy Rankin,
an LPGA golf pro and
ESPN commentator,
served as honorary chair
of the event.
friend.
Because of the strong
community support,
physician dedication and
Oakwood leadership, this
event has generated
more than $4.7 million in
donations since it began
in 1993, allowing
Oakwood an opportunity
to make a difference to
someone’s mother, sister,
wife, aunt, niece, or best
The plans for the 20th Anniversary are already in
the works.
