10.5 Parental LeaveA. A female permanent employee shall be entitled, upon request, to an unpaid leave <strong>of</strong>absence for purposes <strong>of</strong> pregnancy, child birth, recovery therefrom or care for the newbornchild for a period not to exceed one (1) year from the birth <strong>of</strong> the child. The employee shallprovide medical substantiation to support her request for pregnancy leave. The requestmust include the beginning and ending dates <strong>of</strong> the leave and must be requested no laterthan 30 calendar days after the birth <strong>of</strong> the child. Any changes to the leave, once approved,are permissive and subject to authorization <strong>of</strong> the department head or designee.1. If the initial request for parental leave is less than the maximum period allowed,subsequent requests to extend the leave to the maximum one year timeframe arepermissive and may be considered by the department head or designee.2. If the request for parental leave is made more than 30 calendar days after thebirth <strong>of</strong> the child, a permissive unpaid leave <strong>of</strong> absence may be considered by thedepartment head or designee in accordance <strong>with</strong> Article 9, Section 9.8, UnpaidLeave <strong>of</strong> Absence.B. A male spouse or male parent, who is a permanent employee, shall be entitled, uponrequest, to an unpaid leave <strong>of</strong> absence for a period not to exceed one (1) year from the birth<strong>of</strong> the child to care for his newborn child. The employee shall provide medicalsubstantiation to support his request for parental leave. The cost <strong>of</strong> these benefits shall be paid bythe employee at the group rate.10.6 Adoption LeaveA. A department head or designee shall grant a permanent employee's request for anunpaid leave <strong>of</strong> absence for the adoption <strong>of</strong> a child for a period not to exceed six monthsand may grant a permanent employee's request for an additional six months. The employeeshall provide substantiation to support the employee's request for adoption leave.B. During the period <strong>of</strong> time an employee is on adoption leave, he/she shall be allowed tocontinue health and dental benefits. The cost <strong>of</strong> these benefits shall be paid by theemployee and the rate that the employee will pay will be the group rate.63BU <strong>12</strong>(99-01)
