Fall 2009 Welcome Reception<br />

The M.E. <strong>Rinker</strong>, <strong>Sr</strong>. <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Building</strong> Construction hosted its<br />

Fall 2009 Welcome Reception at Emerson Alumni Hall on September<br />

3, 2009. The newest Junior 1’s and graduate students eagerly<br />

listened to the overall message <strong>of</strong> the event: to embrace and take<br />

part in the school’s many academic, pr<strong>of</strong>essional and networking<br />

<strong>of</strong>ferings. Dr. Abdol Chini, director <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong>, listed the many<br />

opportunities in which students may take part, such as student competitions,<br />

exchange programs and student organizations and urged<br />

students to “get involved in as many activities as possible.” Nearly<br />

On Friday, October 16, 2009, the University <strong>of</strong> Florida held its 86th annual Homecoming<br />

Parade. Every year, more than 100,000 fans come out to see the parade floats - including<br />

a float made by BCN students - that make their way down University Avenue. A special<br />

thanks goes to the float sponsors: CE<strong>ME</strong>X, Haskell, BBI Construction Management,<br />

ANF Group, and Hypower.<br />

On Saturday, October 17, more than 100 alumni and friends <strong>of</strong> the M.E. <strong>Rinker</strong>, <strong>Sr</strong>.<br />

<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Building</strong> Construction gathered on the front lawn to celebrate the University<br />

<strong>of</strong> Florida’s 2009 Homecoming BBQ. The event kicked <strong>of</strong>f with an Advisory Council<br />

meeting at 9:30 a.m. and tour <strong>of</strong> <strong>Rinker</strong> Hall followed by the induction <strong>of</strong> Steve Palmer<br />

into the Construction Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame at 11:00 a.m. Steve is Chief Operating Officer for the<br />

Stiles Corporation and is celebrating his 30th year with Stiles.<br />

After much mingling, reminiscing, and a<br />

healthy dose <strong>of</strong> BBQ, BCN alumni watched<br />

a ‘nail-biter’ game against Arkansas at the<br />

Swamp.<br />

a dozen BCN student leaders, such as Adam Milner, president <strong>of</strong><br />

the student chapter <strong>of</strong> Associated Builders and Contractors, invited<br />

students to join the <strong>Rinker</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s many acclaimed organizations.<br />

“The main goal is to provide interaction with pr<strong>of</strong>essors, and get<br />

involved,” Milner said. The students also heard brief introductions<br />

from faculty and staff, who described which courses they teach or<br />

what services they provide at the <strong>Rinker</strong> <strong>School</strong>. A special thanks is<br />

owed to Holder Construction, who sponsored the Fall 2009 Welcome<br />

Reception.<br />
