Thepopularity of Exeter is certainly rising as week by week new vendors are supporting the centre and benefiting from thehighly competitive trading levels. The overall average price per head of £750 today reflected the shortage of qualitystrong cattle forward and a higher percentage of mid-grade types. A well framed 28 month old Simmental, the propertyof Dawn Saunders of Ideford, achieved the top price of the day at £1205 while an entry of well-bred British Blue &Limousin cattle for John Squire of South Tawton saw groups of 18/19 month old steers selling to £1040, £1005 & £100etc. Another run of ten quality Limousin & South Devon x’s from Martin Perryman of Chagford were well rewarded with16/17 month old steers to £1010. An entry of 47 grazing type cattle from Maurice & Jonathan Grose of Helston createdinterest with 16/17 month old British Blue bullocks selling to £940 with younger groups to £810 & £770. Heifers of asimilar age sold in bunches to £800, £780 & £760. Limousin steers off the same farm to £800 and heifers to £820 with15/17 month Friesian steers to £710. A further entry of 21 cattle from Henry Turpin of Roborough saw his best 18month old Charolais steers to £1000, £985 etc. Few heifers strong enough to break the £1000 mark with the best sellingto £1005 for a very shapely British Blue from Ivor Taylor of Okehampton. Apair of double muscled 13/14 month oldfemales of the same breed made £840 apiece for WD & SJ Hosegood of Zeal Monachorum. Pedigree Limousin in-calfcows from Quiney & Spears to £1200 and a 29 month old Saler bull for May Farming Partnership realised £1280. Top call of the day was £680 given fortwo 10 month suckler bred Limousin x steers from James Williams of Yelverton, The same vendor also had shapelyheifers of a similar age to £575. Slightly older 12 month old Simmental x Steers from Stuart Winzer of Totnes reached£650, yearling Charolais x heifers from Clinton Devon Estates made to £565 and 9 month old Welsh Black steers fromRoger Winsor of Princetown made to £505. Robert Harding of Exmouth saw his best 9 month Friesian sorts to £450, asdid Fred Palmer of Totnes with his the best 7-10 month steers together with bunches of lesser quality sorts makingbetween £320 and £340.Cattle vendors are reminded where pedigree native breed bulls have been used, please provide the registered pedigree name of thesire by writing the pedigree name clearly on the entry form.


2436 SHEEP - 11AMAuctioneer: Russell Steer 07788 3187011976 BREEDING EWES & SHEARLINGSThe early breeding sale of ewes & shearlings sold to a very large crowd ofpotential buyers who were, as expected, selective and cautious with theirbuying. The largest selection of commercial breeding sheep so far thisyear saw sheep travelling to Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset, Hampshire,Norfolk, Hereford, Cheshire and as far north as Lanarkshire. The salestarted with the older ewes reaching a top of £138 for 4T age Charollais’from Trevor Marks of Kingsbridge while Kerry Roberts of Bradninchreached £125 with Dorsets of the same age and his FM’s achieved £118twice. Dennis, Hazel & Barry Mildon of Exeter reached £108 with theirbest two pens of FM Dorsets, and FE Tucker of Tiverton reached £104with similar ewes. Plenty of pens of good farming sheep looking value formoney, selling around the £100 mark. The few continental shearlings on offer reached £125 again for Charollais’ fromTrevor Marks and £120 on behalf of CJ & AW Greenslade of Calverleigh and Brian Webber of Cullompton with twopens of Texel x Mules. North Country Mules were selective too, with two pens from Tony Dallyn of Barnstaple reaching£138 and another at £125. A shorter entry of Suffolk x shearlings than catalogued worked into a very fiery and pleasingtrade. Roy Coker of Honiton reached £133 with a further two pens at £131 and another pair at £128. Messrs HalwellFarm of Kingsbridge reached £127, £125 (x2) and £120. Martin & Diane Sizmur of Okehhampton sold 74 good shearlingsfor £126 apiece, Andrew Cock of Ashburton reached £124 of his and Dart Vale & South Pool Hunt reached £116 (x2) &£114 (x3). The annual show & sale of Poll Dorset x Mule shearlings, kindly sponsored by the Dorset Sheep Society, sawSteve Webber of Umberleigh take the first prize rosette, £50 prize money and top price of £130, he sold another pen at£130, a further four pens at £120 and three at £118, well done and congratulationsSteve. John Simons of Chard was awarded second prize and £30 prize money withhis best that realised £125, with others at £121, £118 (x3) and £116. HenryJohnson of Bridport secured third prize and £20 and later sold for £126, £124, £122& £118 (x2). Also worthy of a mention were four pens from David Elworthy ofUmberleigh at £120 (x2), £118 & £112. Among the pure Poll Dorset shearlings, MJ& DM Lake of South Molton reached £130, £124 (x2), £122 & £118 (x3). AC & ERHammett of Umberleigh reached £125, as did Terry & Jean Tall of Modbury, oftheir best pens. £122 was achieved by both Steve Webber and Henry Johnson,£120 from MH, CB & PM Ayre of Crediton, with Mark Kimber of Okehampton at£118. Overall clearance of 79% was very pleasing for this early sale.86 STOCK RAMSA good selection of rams sold to a large crowd of buyers from across the Southwest. Patrick Toop of Yelverton took thetop spot with a Suffolk shearling at £500, while MA Smith of Cullompton sold another Suffolk shearling at £380. RichardBerry of Exeter sold a 4T Charollais at £400 and Suffolk x Charollais rams at £370 & £310. £380 & £360 was achieved byHarold Keast of Crediton, again with Charollais shearlings and B Watts of Ashburton sold his 4T Charollais at £320 andshearlings at £300. A large entry of Dorset rams topped at £390 & £380 for ram lambs from from Colin & Tom Clarke ofCrediton who also sold shearlings at £340 & £300 as well as a 4T at £300. Rob Hole of Sherborne opened the sale with aram lamb at £340, matched by another lamb from Mark Hayman of Sidmouth and two shearlings from Andrew Palk ofPaignton. Andrew & Chris Kingdon of Newquay made the trip up to sell Beltex shearlings at £270 & £260. Over 50%clearance was achieved and shearlings averaged £310. Overall average including some older second quality rams going tokill was £262.330 COUPLES (147 EWES & 183 LAMBS)A good entry, late in the season, met with lots of interest resulting in a solid trade. Mule hoggs with lambs from RundleWeldhen of Newquay topped the section and reached £178 for a hogg double with pens of singles at £164, £162 & £160(x2). Similar hogg singles from Martin Chatfield of Cheriton Bishop made £158 & £155. Messrs JL Burrough & Son ofChard reached £158 with FM doubles and £152 of 4T singles (x2) and £145 of 6T singles. NJ Williams of Ottery St Marysaw £160 an outfit for 15 flock age Dorset doubles and both Brian Clothier of Stoneaston & Phil Caunter of Totnes made£150 of their best doubles. Average of £135.87 an outfit or £60.14 per life.44 GRAZERS & HOGGSTop of £88 for a young wether from Robert Partridge of Teignmouth, £78 from JL Burrough & Son of Chard and SMosam of Ashburton, with £74 from both Brian Webber of Cullompton and John Down of Taunton. A wide selection ofbreeds including Soya’s, Dorper’s, Jacob’s and Kerry Hill’s helped towards an average of £68.31.
