Clients traveling on customized itineraries receive a hand-out about “TravelingResponsibly” in which we remind them that they can make a positive difference byfollowing some simple guidelines. One section focuses on philanthropy. We host educational conference calls for GSGC members on a quarterly basis. Expertspresent information on topics such as girls and education and micro-lending. We alsooffer conference calls when a GSGC group has returned from visiting the projects sothat they can update other members and share their experiences. Occasionally we offera call where members can discuss a book that is related to international philanthropyand/or our specific focus.• How are Funds Distributed? Each year Global Sojourns accepts proposalsfrom organizations in southern Africa. Thevetting committee reviews the proposals andmakes recommendations to the GSGCmembers regarding allocation of the funds. Then the full Giving Circle membership voteson these recommendations. We only fundorganizations in Africa that have legal status asnon-profits. We provide copies of theproposals and legal documents to our fiscalsponsor. The sponsor prepares the paperworkand wires the funds to the organization’saccount.GSGC member shares photos and stories with schoolchildren, Dambwa, Zambia.Credit: Global Sojourns.• What is the Structure to Ensure Accountability? We visit the projects two or three times per year and review the organizations’ books. Anaccountant who runs a highly respected accounting firm in Africa volunteers his time to assisttwo of the organizations with their books. This gives us an additional level of accountability. Theorganizations also prepare financial and narrative reports.• How Much Has Been Raised? We have distributed $15,000 - $25,000 in total per year for the past four years.• Has Your Philanthropic Program Helped, Hurt, or Had No Impact on Your Business? There is no direct correlation between our philanthropy work and an increase in clients but thatwas not the purpose. The purpose is to provide those with a heart for Africa with a way to “giveback” in a manner that is direct, responsible, and impactful and to provide the donors with aconnection with and increased understanding of the people and communities that they areassisting. For more information contact:Priscilla Macy: Macy@globalsojourns.com81
