participants said they charge volunteer fees, although some did specifically mention that theyexpect volunteers to cover their own expenses. Most respondents said that volunteers typicallydonate funds or material goods after they have completed their service.Two of the organizations surveyed said that they rely heavily on volunteers. One explained,“There would be no English, math, or computer teachers without volunteers.” Others findvolunteer support important when it is aligned with the organization’s needs. For example, onerespondent explained, “Support from highly skilled, qualified, and experienced experts infinance, strategic planning, marketing, IT, and education is vital.” However, whileacknowledging the benefits, one organization cautioned, “Volunteer support can sometimes beburdensome <strong>for</strong> the organization. The organization must use financial, human, and timeresources to adequately host volunteers.”Several organizations noted that volunteers bring an added benefit that goes beyond their directassistance. As one put it, “Teaming up volunteers with Tanzanian staff often fosters sharedlearning experiences. For the volunteers, they have a chance to learn about local culture andlivelihoods, and most importantly, to challenge their existing misconceptions and prejudices.For the Tanzanian staff, they gain exposure todifferent ways of approaching problems,conducting activities, and managing programs.”Community HIV/AIDs program, Tanzania.Credit: Sauti MojaSurvey participants noted a range of otherbenefits. Volunteers tend to donate funds,materials, and goods be<strong>for</strong>e or during theirvolunteer experience. By dedicating their timeand energy to a project, volunteers gain a senseof ownership and commitment to theirorganization. After they finish as volunteers, theyare likely to continue to make donations and assistthe organization. As one respondent explained,“One volunteer now donates $100 every month tous, because she valued her experience so much.”• How do <strong>Travel</strong>ers Learn about Local Organizations?There are many ways <strong>for</strong> travelers to learn about civic organizations and projects in northernTanzania. Tour operators often build in<strong>for</strong>mation about local organizations, including site visits,into their tours. Some organizations have websites that promote their work and invite travelersto visit their projects. Increasingly, travel guides such as Lonely Planet (which was specificallymentioned by one recipient) list local organizations, thereby helping to draw tourist attention tothem. In addition, travelers who have visited in the past tend to share their experiences andstories with future travelers, thus spreading the word about these organizations’ work.• Importance of Site VisitsSurvey respondents rated site visits as the most effective method of introducing travelers totheir project or organization. One respondent explained, “Their gift at the time of their visit isimportant, but the most valuable thing is when they go home and spread awareness, raise funds[<strong>for</strong> our organization], and continue to contribute regularly themselves.” Those interviewed170
