United States. Tourists stay an average 12 days in Tanzania, with 69% coming on packagetours and 31% arriving as individual travelers. Those on package tours spend an average $155per night, while individual travellers spend slightly less - $125 per night.• The <strong>Travel</strong>ers’ <strong>Philanthropy</strong> SurveyThere are about 200 licensed tour operators in and around Arusha. At the beginning of thisresearch project, sixty companies involved in travelers' philanthropy were invited to participate ina survey. Of those sixty, twenty seven companies agreed to participate in the survey: twentyone through personal interviews with the author and six via email. 55Chart 1. Most are small tomedium sized travel companies, with between 10 to 250 company employees. Seventy percentare locally owned and 30% are international companies owned by <strong>for</strong>eigners or belonging to aninternational company with a branch office in Arusha. Most of the companies only operate in theNorthern Safari Circuit; but some also offer trips to Zanzibar and other areas in Tanzania, a fewoperate in other African countries (mainly in East Africa), and two operate worldwide.55 The tour companies that participated in the survey are: & Beyond, Abercrombie & Kent, African Environments, Asilia Tanzania,Bush2Beach Safaris, Classic Tours & Safaris, Dorobo Safaris, Duma Explorer, Focus in Africa, Green Footprint Adventures / WayoAfrica, Hoopoe Safaris, J.M.
