When Seltzer moved on to other work in 2003, he approached the newly <strong>for</strong>med <strong>Center</strong> onEcotourism and Sustainable Development (CESD) about taking over BEST’s <strong>Travel</strong>ers’<strong>Philanthropy</strong> Program. CESD (now CREST, <strong>Center</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Responsible</strong> <strong>Travel</strong>) agreed, and BESTtransferred its files and remaining <strong><strong>Travel</strong>ers'</strong> <strong>Philanthropy</strong> resources to us. In January 2004,CREST issued an updated version of Seltzer’s original White Paper on <strong>Travel</strong>ers’ <strong>Philanthropy</strong>,reflecting more recent industry trends and future directions. 8In April 2004, CREST hosted the first major International <strong>Travel</strong>ers’ <strong>Philanthropy</strong> Conference atStan<strong>for</strong>d University, in Cali<strong>for</strong>nia. The groundbreaking conference was attended by 80 tourismexecutives involved in travelers’ philanthropy, representatives from philanthropic foundations,major NGOs, UN agencies, tourism associations, and academics. 9 After the conference,CREST built a <strong>Travel</strong>ers’ <strong>Philanthropy</strong> website 10 , created an Experts Bureau 11 , and in 2008,commissioned the first ever documentary on travelers’ philanthropy, “Giving Time, Talent andTreasure” which examines projects in Costa Rica, Kenya, and Tanzania. 12As a result of the 2004 gathering, a number of tourism companies with longstandingrelationships with CREST voiced their desireto have a nonprofit partner based in the U.S.that could receive donations securely and offerU.S. donors tax deductibility <strong>for</strong> theircontributions to community projects. CRESTworked with its lawyers and JustGive.org (acompany that offers a secure server <strong>for</strong>donations to nonprofits) to develop a websiteportal to receive online donations <strong>for</strong> projectssupported by our partner tourism companies.As is standard in the industry, CREST retainsMaasai education project, Basecamp Masai Mara, Kenya.Credit: Basecamp Foundation10% of donated funds to cover administrativecosts and help to support its programmaticwork in this field. Today CREST’s <strong>Travel</strong>ers’<strong>Philanthropy</strong> website (www.traverlersphilanthropy.org) is a comprehensive, one-stop-shop <strong>for</strong>in<strong>for</strong>mation about creating and promoting travelers’ philanthropy programs, while its donationportal allows travelers and others to make tax deductible donations online to the communityprojects listed on the site.In December 2008, CREST hosted the second International <strong>Travel</strong>er's <strong>Philanthropy</strong> conferencein Arusha, Tanzania, bringing together 230 practitioners from socially responsible tourismbusinesses, experts in the field of sustainable tourism and philanthropy, community-basedorganizations and global and regional NGOs doing development work, the United Nations andother development agencies, philanthropic foundations, government, and international media.The 3-day conference -- at which Nobel Laureate Dr. Wangari Maathai, founder and leader ofKenya’s Green Belt Movement, gave the opening keynote address -- was the largest and mostdiverse travelers’ philanthropy conference ever held and the first conference in Africa to addresstravelers’ philanthropy.8 http://www.travelersphilanthropy.org/resources/documents/whitepaper_report.pdf9 http://travelersphilanthropy.org/events/archive.html.10 www.travelersphilanthropy.org.11 http://www.travelersphilanthropy.org/resources/experts-bureau.shtml.12 Copies are available from CREST.
