When Seltzer moved on to other work in 2003, he approached the newly formed Center onEcotourism and Sustainable Development (CESD) about taking over BEST’s Travelers’Philanthropy Program. CESD (now CREST, Center for Responsible Travel) agreed, and BESTtransferred its files and remaining Travelers' Philanthropy resources to us. In January 2004,CREST issued an updated version of Seltzer’s original White Paper on Travelers’ Philanthropy,reflecting more recent industry trends and future directions. 8In April 2004, CREST hosted the first major International Travelers’ Philanthropy Conference atStanford University, in California. The groundbreaking conference was attended by 80 tourismexecutives involved in travelers’ philanthropy, representatives from philanthropic foundations,major NGOs, UN agencies, tourism associations, and academics. 9 After the conference,CREST built a Travelers’ Philanthropy website 10 , created an Experts Bureau 11 , and in 2008,commissioned the first ever documentary on travelers’ philanthropy, “Giving Time, Talent andTreasure” which examines projects in Costa Rica, Kenya, and Tanzania. 12As a result of the 2004 gathering, a number of tourism companies with longstandingrelationships with CREST voiced their desireto have a nonprofit partner based in the U.S.that could receive donations securely and offerU.S. donors tax deductibility for theircontributions to community projects. CRESTworked with its lawyers and JustGive.org (acompany that offers a secure server fordonations to nonprofits) to develop a websiteportal to receive online donations for projectssupported by our partner tourism companies.As is standard in the industry, CREST retainsMaasai education project, Basecamp Masai Mara, Kenya.Credit: Basecamp Foundation10% of donated funds to cover administrativecosts and help to support its programmaticwork in this field. Today CREST’s Travelers’Philanthropy website (www.traverlersphilanthropy.org) is a comprehensive, one-stop-shop forinformation about creating and promoting travelers’ philanthropy programs, while its donationportal allows travelers and others to make tax deductible donations online to the communityprojects listed on the site.In December 2008, CREST hosted the second International Traveler's Philanthropy conferencein Arusha, Tanzania, bringing together 230 practitioners from socially responsible tourismbusinesses, experts in the field of sustainable tourism and philanthropy, community-basedorganizations and global and regional NGOs doing development work, the United Nations andother development agencies, philanthropic foundations, government, and international media.The 3-day conference -- at which Nobel Laureate Dr. Wangari Maathai, founder and leader ofKenya’s Green Belt Movement, gave the opening keynote address -- was the largest and mostdiverse travelers’ philanthropy conference ever held and the first conference in Africa to addresstravelers’ philanthropy.8 http://www.travelersphilanthropy.org/resources/documents/whitepaper_report.pdf9 http://travelersphilanthropy.org/events/archive.html.10 www.travelersphilanthropy.org.11 http://www.travelersphilanthropy.org/resources/experts-bureau.shtml.12 Copies are available from CREST. The attendance figures from our two travelers’ philanthropy conferences provide a quick gaugeof the growth in interest in this movement. The 2004 conference had 80 participants, while thesecond in Tanzania had 225 participants from 20-plus countries, and was co-sponsored by 31companies, NGOs, and UN and development agencies. Today it is fair to say that there arethousands of tourism companies involved in ‘give back’ projects.As travelers’ philanthropy has grown, discussions about it have become richer and deeper. The2008 conference examined, for instance, moving from charity and handout philanthropy modelsto selecting projects that promote social empowerment and entrepreneurship; using travelers’philanthropy to address two critical global issues, HIV AIDS and climate change; and bestpractices and bad practices for engaging travelers. “The success of this conference was that itwas not an academic jamboree. Instead, it was a place where actions/experiences were sharedand debated,” commented Gopinath Parayil, founder of The Blue Yonder, an Indian tourcompany.CREST and the Monteverde Institute areorganizing and hosting the 3 rd InternationalTravelers’ Philanthropy Conference in July 2011,in Costa Rica. On the agenda is a new approach- destination-wide travelers’ philanthropyprograms supported with a common fund.Previously, travelers’ philanthropy typicallyinvolved individual hotels or other tourismbusinesses providing support to communityprojects through corporate and visitor donations.While it is clear that these initiatives arecollectively generating tens of millions of dollarsannually, they are uncoordinated andunmeasured in terms of contributions or impacts.Technical High School Farm helps rural youth, EcuadorCredit: Yachana LodgeIn late 2010, CREST began pilot projects with the Monteverde Institute and FundaciónCorcovado in Costa Rica to build destination-wide travelers’ philanthropy programs inMonteverde and the Osa Peninsula. These pilot projects move travelers’ philanthropy to a newstrategic level: one that creates a fund through destination-wide traveler donations that willsupport a suite of carefully selected projects identified as meeting local development andconservation priorities.• Travelers’ Philanthropy and Trends in Travel and Development AssistanceTravelers’ philanthropy is being propelled not only by the growth in individual giving but also bythe growth in travel and shifts in traveler preferences, as well as by shortfalls in internationalgovernment assistance to developing countries. Individuals all over the world are travelingmore, making them a powerful economic force by virtue of sheer numbers.
