Voluntourism is a specialkind of travel and not everyone is suitedto it. The experience starts be<strong>for</strong>e it evenbegins - - with Y-O-U! "Know Thyself" isthe first step in the process ofdetermining if this is the right kind oftravel <strong>for</strong> you. If you feel like you are intune with yourself, then you havecovered more than 50% of what isrequired to decide if you will enjoy beinga volunteer and to select the bestvoluntourism journey. The exercises thatfollow will help you get in tune withyourself, if you are not already, and willbe useful even if you understand yourselfwell, pay particular attention to whatfollows:This is a BIG DECISION. It involves many aspects of who you are as a person - your personalpreferences and aversions, your emotional well-being, your attitude, and, very likely, a sizeablefinancial investment.Most significant of all, your decision impacts other people - destination residents, fellowvoluntourists, the coordinators of your trip, and your friends and family. (This last group isespecially important because these folks are the individuals who will hear any post-trip griping ifyou did not come away with what you expected.)
