THE PERSE PELICANNURSERY AND PRE-PREPARATORY SCHOOL11 th November 2011Dear Parents,The week began with the APP coffee morning and the sale of secondhand uniform; I hope those of you who were able to attend found thisevent enjoyable and helpful. As our parents left, the children cameinto a special assembly with a visit from Cambridgeshire Constabulary.Ms Pearl talked to the children about ways to remain visible in thedark when cycling or walking. As expected, our children had manyideas and contributed confidently to the assembly.Year 1 have been learning about the concept of old and new by comparingmany different types of toys. They have been looking at the differentmaterials used and the reasons why toys begin to look worn as well aswriting some wonderful descriptions of their toys. Both staff and childrenhave enjoyed reading the history behind some of our parents’ toys! Toenrich the children’s learning they have visited the Folk Museum wherethey have examined some very old toys and also made their own peg doll.As today is Remembrance Day the Pelican children stood together this morning at11am, in a circle with all the staff, for one minute’s silence. Although war is a hardconcept for small children to understand, our assembly focussed simply on whypeople wear poppies and the importance of remembering what others gave up for us.The children have bought and sold poppies enthusiastically; thank you for your donations.A reminder that next week, from Monday to Thursday, the Book Fair is coming. It will be held atthe front of school, in the library area, each day from 3 – 3.30pm. Please enter by the front door.On Friday 9 th December at 9am we will be holding our termly Sport Awards Assembly. Furtherinformation can be found at the end of this newsletter. We are looking forward to a performanceby the children who attend Street Dancing club as part of the assembly. Parents are most welcometo attend.A couple of uniform items: As the weather slowly begins to turn colder and asso many children sit on the back of bicycles or walk to school, I am pleased totell you that we have decided to offer boys the option of wearing long grey(not dark grey) easy care trousers instead of shorts as part of their winteruniform. As with all belongings, please make sure they are clearly marked. Itmakes it much easier for the children to find their coats at playtimes if theyare clearly named in the collar. Clear naming minimises the number of coats
