with Susan JacobsTo promote ethical behavior and helpsupport Huntington Ingalls’ 2012 ethicstheme – “Ethics – Shaping the Culture” –short interviews with Shipbuilding executiveswill be featured monthly in Centerline. Thisedition features Susan Jacobs, directorof Human Resources and Administration,Employee Relations, and Talent Acquisition. How do you promote anorganizational culture that encouragesethical conduct? The best way to promote ethicalculture is to conduct myself ethically atall times. Absent that, nothing I couldsay or do with my team would havemuch of an impact. Additionally, clearcommunication regarding expectations Ihave for those on my team is absolutelyvital. Is there a difference between what isconsidered an ethics violation versus atypical workplace rule? There definitely is a difference. TheEmployee Relations team is often taskedwith investigating employee complaintsthat come through the OpenLine system. We take this responsibility very seriouslybecause the Code of Ethical Conductrepresents the standards of conduct thecompany requires. Most of the calls comefrom individuals who have witnessedsomething that they believe violates arule. What is interesting is that oftenthe rule in question is not one thatoriginates in the Code of Ethical Conduct.Very often, the rule actually originatesin the Employee Informational Guide,Working with Ingalls. For example, wemay receive a call reporting a coworker’sabsenteeism problem. While the caller’sconcerns may be valid, the actual issue, attendance, cannot be categorized as anethical violation. In such cases, there aremore preferred ways for an employeeto surface his or her concerns. The bestway would be for the employee to speakwith his or her manager or director. Theemployee could also contact their HRBusiness Partner directly for assistance. Most employees want to do the rightthing but perhaps just haven’t consideredthe difference between a genuineethical violation and a violation of othercompany rules.Should organization leaders betreated the same as regular employeeswhen they commit an ethics violation?I am convinced that organizationalleaders must be held to an even higherstandard than other employees. Theconsequences for ethical violations byan organizational leader should also besignificantly greater. All employees haveto meet the minimum ethical standardsof the company. But the behavior ofleaders has a ripple effect across theentire company. Ethical lapses areparticularly lethal for organizationalleaders and must be dealt with quicklyand decisively. What does “Embedded EthicalValues” mean to you, and what aresome examples of those values that aremost important to our business?“Embedded Ethical Values” are thosethat have become essential to the “waywe do business” at Ingalls. Once anethical value has been embedded, itis virtually impossible to separate itfrom the way we function and act eachday. While all of our ethical values areimportant, there are two broad areasthat to me are deal-breakers. The first is astrict compliance with all of our businesslaws and regulations, particularly thosepertaining to U.S. government contracts. We have to do the right thing every time. The second critical area is around thestandards of professional conduct. Howwe act at work and how we treat oneanother is crucial. It’s not enough to dothe right thing – we have to do the rightthing in the right way. What do you believe is the idealculture for the shipyard and what stepsare needed to achieve that culture?I would argue that the ideal culturefor our shipyard is not that differentthan the ideal culture for any otherbusiness in America. We should regardsafety as sacrosanct, respect and valueevery individual, consider honestyand integrity to be core competencies, and consider building great ships tobe a personal obligation. To me, theseare things upon which we are alreadyfocused, and I believe we should stay thecourse. How do you define ethical leadershipas it relates to your organization? For me, ethical leadership is aboutconsistency over time, building a solidreputation among coworkers, peersand management. And on a personallevel, it’s about me meeting the sameexpectations I have set for my team – toput the safety and welfare of employeesfirst, to meet my commitments, followthe rules, treat others with respect, tobe honest and have integrity, and to beduty-bound personally to contribute tothe building of great ships at Ingalls. The OpenLine offers a toll-free phonenumber (1-877-631-0020) for reportingviolations of Huntington Ingalls’ Code ofEthics and Business Conduct.Help send care packages for Armed Forces DayShipbuilders are collecting donations for military carepackages until May 1.The care packages will be mailed to military personnelprior to Armed Forces Day.On May 1, the Veterans Employee Resource Team (VERT)will hold a packing party in DCR 3 from 4 - 6 p.m.Three packing times are also scheduled on May 2, from6:30 - 7:30 a.m., 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., and from 4 - 6 p.m.For more information, contact Kathy McGovern at (228)935-5107, Gisele Huckaby at (228) 935-3007, or Susan Farrisat (228) 935-1055.
