Volume X, Issue 5 Page 3 THE DODGELAND CONNECTIONIt’s Elementary, My Dear WatsonFrom the Principal’s DeskI am so proud of our students for raising $5,389.62 duringJump Rope for Heart. The funds collected benefit theAmerican Heart Association. Thank you to all of the familieswho contributed to this cause and helped our studentsexperience helping others in need.As you all know, this year we implemented the new mathprogram, Math Expressions, which has certainly raisedthe level of math work for our students. Each day that Ivisit classrooms to see student learning, I am just amazedby the level of math thinking our students are doing! Wealso know it has changed how parents help with math athome since many strategies used are not how we learnedmath many years ago. Teachers are sending home parentletters that explain and show new strategies to allow youto assist at home. If your child is stuck, it may be morefrustrating if you show them the way you learned. Insteadof becoming frustrated together you can simply write theteacher a note for the following day and contact the teacherwith any questions. For those of you already planning ahead for SummerSchool, the packets of available classes should be comingout in early April. For now you can save the followingdates on your calendar:Session 1: June 17 th -July18 th (with July 4 th off)Session 2: July 29 th - August 15 thBoth sessions will run Monday-Thursday, half-days, witha selection of remedial and enrichment classes.Yours in Education,Mrs. Jessica JohnsonElementary School PrincipalSee what elementary school students arelearning at Mrs. Johnson’s Principal Page athttp://bit.ly/principaljohnson.You can also receive schoolupdates by following us onFacebook. Volume X, Issue 5 Page 12 THE DODGELAND CONNECTION“Hold the Date”Happy Spring to our Dodgeland families! This has been atrue Wisconsin winter and many of us are wonderingwhere, exactly, all of this snow is going to go (in our basements??).The good news is that Spring is a time of renewaland new life.Dodgeland High School is excited to move ahead afterhaving experienced the internationally renowned ChallengeDays this winter. We had two excellent leaders,Jake and Malvika, come from California to spend two dayswith staff and students, eighth through eleventh grade, toguide us through their program of music, laughter, games, tears, apologies, renewed relationships, and fresh starts. Idon’t think, in the history of Dodgeland, that there hasbeen a day quite like this, where teachers, students, andcommunity members have been able to play together andget real together, forming bonds of understanding and realizationthat we are all on the same team. Moving forwardinto next year’s high school class is exciting, knowing thatmany of these students and staff experienced a heartchangeat Challenge Day that will influence our culturehere. Thank you to all who participated; for your energy, time, and for “dropping your waterline.”We are also eager to announce that Lamers Bus Company, whose drivers get your students safely to and from schooleach day, is the first bus company in the grant consortiumof Dodge County to put many of its drivers through ourNonviolent Crisis Intervention training. This is groundbreakingfor our area, and we are proud to be in partnershipwith a company of drivers who are interested in investingtheir time and money into increased and improvedrelationships and safety with our students. I spent twomornings with these folks and enjoyed meaningful conversations, brainstorming, and troubleshooting with them. They are dedicated to our kids and our community, and Iam better for having had the opportunity to get to knowthem a bit. Thank you, Lamers.I challenge you to enjoy the rain, jump inpuddles, and as it falls on your face, to let itremind you that it’s good to be alive!Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committedcitizens can change the world.
