Cardell® MAX-12HD User’s Manual10.1 Cuff PlacementNOTE: Place the patient on a padded surface to provide comfort, and warmth.Shivering will inhibit the monitor from making a determination.Cuff placement for a catA cat may be left in its owner’s lap to keep it calm. Measurements are bestdone in an area of the hospital away from noise and bright lights. The animalmay be held so that the front limbs are free for cuff placement. In consciouspatients, the tail may be the most appropriate location for placement of thecuff. Cats may be most comfortable in sternal recumbency making the tail amore preferable site. For the median artery on the foreleg, place the cuffaround the forelimb, between the elbow and carpus. It is not necessary tocenter the cuff over the artery which is on the medial side of the leg because ofthe fully encircling bladder design. Hair need not be clipped except whenheavily matted. In cats less than five (5) pounds when measurements aredifficult to obtain, place the cuff around the leg above the elbow to obtainmeasurements from the brachial artery. Measurements from the coccygealartery may be used by placing the cuff around the base of the tail but not inanesthetized patients.Cuff placement for a dogFor measurements in dogs, it is preferable to use the right lateral, sternal ordorsal recumbent positions. That is not a problem in anesthetized patients, butit may be difficult to get large dogs to cooperate for proper positioning. If the76 M1.0 5-15-09
