Vibram ® “Pinto”Specialist trekking sole provides backpacking stability.• Low cut profile• Excellent grip on all types of terrain• Found on ZicZac and Jannu modelsLOWA “Crystal”Comfortable sole unit for hiking in coldest, iciest conditions.• Two different rubber compounds for comfort, shock and stability• Sharp profile elements for excellent grip and traction on snow and ice• Found on all LOWA Snowboot modelsPU vs. EVA- PU midsoles provide long lasting cushioning andshock absorption and help control excessive footmovement.- In footwear where the main goal is light weight,EVA is best but it does have limitations. BecauseEVA is softer, it tends to break down quicker. Infact it can break down just sitting in a box inyour closet. Although EVA is soft and cushiony, ithas a tendency to “chunk out” and tear, and canbe easily punctured. When you see horizontalstriation lines in your EVA midsoles, the materialhas lost all its cushioning ability.SPS TechnologyLOWA’s SPS technology, introduced in 2004, is aproprietary midsole technology. How it works: Byplacing supportive TPU inserts within the softer PUmidsole mold, SPS helps control and prevent theoverpronation and supination that can occur duringwalking. The result:A more balancedand stable stride, forbetter comfort on longhikes and extendedbackpacking trips.- PU is also a foam, usually denser, heavier andmore durable than EVA. PU has a longer life, andalthough it’s a little heavier than EVA, the longterm cushioning, rebound and durability are realbenefits that “outweigh” its actual weight. EVA isgreat for racing shoes - just don’t get stuck in thebackcountry with EVA!- PU is more supportive and cushioned for carryingheavier loads or for use by heavier people.Environmentally speaking, PU foam uses lessdangerous solvents, like highly toxic glue, in theattachment process.PU vs. EVAMedium-weightLight-weightVery supportiveCushionyMore shock absorbing“Chunks out”Long lifeShort lifeNon-toxicToxicSole Units17
