Well, the shank affects how the boot will flex while you walk as well asadding torsional stability. Shanks are “sandwiched” between the outsole and midsole.LOWA uses nylon shanks that vary in thickness, are tapered and shaped to determinethe correct flex for each boot. I bought my Lady Tempest Lo boots in1999 and for six years now I have done everythingunder the sun in them including step aerobics,hiking, jogging, gardening - you name it- and they are still in great shape. Iam able to wear them to work which Ido on a daily basis during the winter. Ihave toyed with trying to find a newboot, but I have not been able to givethese up yet.
