Dr Das is also Medical Directorof drushti daan Eye Bank and Head, Education Centre at Bhubaneswar campus.”Thank you!My son, Tarun (name changed) is 3. He was fine at birth, but did not fixhis gaze till the age of 2 months. An ophthalmologist said his eyes were fine, but something else could be wrong. A pediatric neurologist diagnosed himwith Tuberous Scelosis. He had many tubers in his brain and a big one in hisoccipital lobe, due to which, he was considered to be cortically blind. Buthis VEP was normal for his age. The blindness was supposedly due tocontinuous seizures in the occipital lobe.He was under medication, but there was continuous occipital lobedischarge. Doctors had given up since the number of tubers was unusuallyhigh and located in very strategic places, affecting his vitals. His prognosiswas bleak, unsure and dangerous. At 7 months, he was a living vegetable, hardly acknowledging the world around him. Doctors were ready todiagnose this as autism due to TSC, at that age!Ophthalmologists at L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, diagnosed him tobe cortically blind and did not give much chance of recovery. But the visualrehabilitation therapists at your hospital gave us a detailed rehabilitationprogram to be followed at home. After a month Tarun could see - at theage of 10 months, our son could see for the first time! We started him onphysiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. He improved byleaps and bounds. At an assessment visit to your hospital we were happy to know that hisvision had considerably improved. Your rehabilitation therapists gave us amore vigorous program this time and we followed the same.Tarun's vision has improved at every visit to your hospital. Your therapistshave assured us that his vision shall be fine forever. You have a truly greatrehabilitation team! Our son is in the safe hands of Dr Niranjan Pehere and, before him, Dr Ramesh Kekunnaya. Can you believe it that our son is nowtracking small ants to their home and trying to tell us the features of a birdflying high in the air?!This mail is to thank you and also to the great team of doctor andtherapists of your esteemed hospital.””Dr KulkarniDharwad, KarnatakaI have been so inspired by the organization of LVPEI; it is truly a modelfor sustainable delivery of health care for the world. The dedication of thefaculty and fellows is unsurpassed, and if I were not married, I would applyfor fellowship here! There are very few academic departments thatcombine such breadth of pathology, surgical expertise, and researchendeavors. My visit is much too short, but based on what I have learned in2.5 weeks, I can only imagine what can be mastered in 2 years.SincerelyVirginia Utz(At LVPEI on a 3-week clinical rotation, from Cleveland, Ohio, USA)”Upcoming ProgramsConcepts & Controversies: Cataractand Refractive SurgeryFebruary 26 - 27, 2011@ LVPEI, VisakhapatnamCombined meeting of VI-APVRS withXX-VRSIDecember 1 - 3, 2011@ LVPEI, HyderabadInternational guest lecturesŸ ‘Myopia’ by Prof Brien A Holden, Scientia Professor,University of New South Wales; Founder & Director,Cornea and Contact Lens Research Unit, SOVS,UNSW and Deputy CEO, Vision CRC, AustraliaŸ ‘The science and art behind current approaches tomanagement of glaucoma' by Dr Karim F Damji,Professor of Ophthalmology, University of AlbertaŸ ‘One retina blastoma world’ by Prof Brenda L Gallie,Professor, University of Toronto, Toronto, CanadaŸ ‘Science technology and society interface’ by ProfWiebe Bijker, Professor of Technology & Society,University of Maastricht, NetherlandsGlobal Leaders Lecture Series‘Retinopathy of Prematurity’ by Prof Rosalind AStevens, Professor of Surgery (Ophthalmology),Dartmouth Medical School, Hanover, NH, USAOur support in JanuaryHyderabadDr Usha KumarJustice TNC Ranga RajanSreedevi PenmetchaVijaya L RamamTSR PrasadK Satya Gnana PrasunambaP Mohan ReddyAshok MalpaneKala GopalakrishnanAtul Kumar AgarwalRamakanthShoukat Ali Nanji CharanyaS Sampoorna NandaSai Sri PrintersNavabharat Ventures LimitedBhubaneswarPrabhas DebataSujata DasBikash C MohantaKshitish C MohantyKirteemayee RoulDebasri GhoshRaman & Will Pvt LtdSri Onkar Nath Seva TrustCombat BlindnessFoundation, USAPuneSangeeta WaghChennaiG SatyanarayanaVisakhapatnamMerle FernandesMumbaiCharulatha C SampatKallam Anji Reddy CampusHyderabadTel: +91 40 30612345Fax: +91 40 23548271E-mail: info.hyd@lvpei.orgL V PRASAD EYE INSTITUTEPatia, BhubaneswarOrissaTel: +91 0674 39892020Fax: +91 0674 3987130E-mail: info.bbsr@lvpei.orgGMR Varalakshmi CampusVisakhapatnamTel: +91 0891 39892020Fax: +91 0891 3984444E-mail: info.vizag@lvpei.orgKode Venkatadri Chowdary CampusTadigadapaVijayawadaTel: +91 0866 3062020E-mail: KVC-appointment@lvpei.org
