A Life in the Day of Nixdown Nixondigs with eleven other inmates. The dorms offeralmost no privacy, just six beds lined up on eithersides of the austere room. Unlike the upstairs study’swe were not allowed to hang pictures or show offpersonal effects. Even during the period I spent inreform school I enjoyed better accommodations.Nonetheless, in hindsight we had a lot of funand we got over our inhibitions. The dorms were ahot-bed of plotting, planning, conniving andmalfeasance.The rules regarding silence after lockdown arestrictly imposed. That didn’t stop us. We routinelyengaged in games of ‘Dare’ and played cat andmouse with the Dorm Raiders. The stakes were high;if we were caught a caning was mandatory. Even fora pain junkie like me, getting six stripes under yourjimjams last thing at night is not particularlyconducive to a good night’s shut-eye. Of course weare Woody Gals and we did not let the threat of six ofthe best divert us from the joys of minxing. Duringthose years of co-habituating in the dorms I wasprobably caned a dozen times and my record was notconsidered particularly noteworthy. Sweet and painfulmemories.
