10A Case of the ResidualsThe Grand Master only stops momentarily todismiss Ginger from the hall and send her upstairs toget herself inspected. Ginger used to be aprofessional ballerina and normally she moves with awonderful grace and seems to glide across the floorbut she looks self-conscious and slightly ungainly asshe trudges towards the door. Poor Ginger, nothing tolook forward to except six of the very best. The remainder of assembly is a routine affairwith Mr Humphries repeating the day’s agenda thatwe had discussed earlier. As I am leaving the hallDeborah falls in beside me and slips her arm intomine.“Don’t look so glum, you know that it was afair call,” she says soothingly. “She knows the form sothere’s no point in beating yourself up about it.”She is right, of course, but it doesn’t stop mefrom feeling like a heel.We cut through the corridors and step out intothe cloisters. It is a brisk morning but the sun is
A Life in the Day of Nixdown Nixonbeginning to break through so hopefully it will turninto a pretty day as I will have to spend the majorityof it patrolling the grounds.Debs is chattering away cheerfully about hernew hairdo. Despite her natural self-assurance whichcan sometimes be rather irritating she is not in theleast bit vain. In fact she is quite the opposite andcan be very self-conscious. I think that is part of thereason that she always used to dress like a hobo.Yesterday I finally persuaded her to come into townwith me and a visit a friend of mine, Pencil, at hissalon. We took the bus into town and she wasextremely grumpy and non-communicative. Iassumed this was because she still had smokebillowing out from under her skirt as a result of beingcaned by the Wart just an hour earlier. The Warthates Deborah and really did a number on her.The Wart landed the first five strokes with textbookprecision and then announced that she wasgoing to finish things up with a bacon slicer. We allhad our fingers crossed and were hoping that theWart would fluff the stroke and miss but sadly not.Somehow Debs managed to stay down andavoided giving the Wart the opportunity to take asecond shot at her. Of course Debs put a brave faceon it while she was being post-processed but I haveknown her for a long time and I could tell that shehad just been nailed and was in pretty bad shapes. My pal Pencil is as camp as a row of tents andcan be very bitchy but I had instructed him to be niceto Debs and for once he kept his catty tongue in
