Ingham Is Now McLaren
In January of 2012, Ingham Regional
Medical Center and Ingham Regional Orthopedic
Hospital announced the decision
to change their names to McLaren Greater
Lansing and McLaren Orthopedic Hospital
to reflect their position at the heart of one
of Michigan’s largest and fastest growing
health care families, McLaren Health Care.
In response to this change, Ingham Regional
Healthcare Foundation’s Board of
Trustees decided to follow suit, becoming
McLaren Greater Lansing Healthcare Foundation.
Though the name has changed, the
objective to support a healthy lifestyle and
provide a world-class healthcare facility for
the community has not.
The rebranding initiative enables McLaren
to have a single identity that reflects the
scope and impact of the organization across
the state. All of McLaren Health Care’s subsidiaries
have also gone through a name

change in order to provide a comprehensive
and extensive presence of the McLaren
name and network throughout Michigan.
McLaren Health Care is proudly named
after Margaret E. McLaren, a registered
nurse who began her career at Women’s
Hospital in Flint, Michigan, in 1924. Ms.
McLaren served as senior administrator to
Women’s Hospital and led the 40-bed facility
for women into a 243-bed general hospital.
In 1951, Women’s Hospital was aptly
renamed McLaren General Hospital to honor
Ms. McLaren and the values she upheld
throughout her life.
Today, McLaren is annually recognized as
one of the top Integrated Health Networks
in the nation and one of the largest health
care providers in the state with a system that
reaches more than half of Michigan residents
through more than 200 locations, 17,000
employees and 11,000 network physicians. <

“The Hippest Party in Town” brought an
award-winning new vibe to the foundation’s
Annual Gala, taking home the PACE Pinnacle
award for Special Events.

Raises the Bar
On November 12, 2011, McLaren Greater
Lansing Healthcare Foundation proudly
presented the “Hippest Party in Town,” a
retro-themed gala featuring a live and silent
auction and casino gaming with proceeds
benefitting the McLaren Orthopedic Hospital.
The disco dance floor, music and atmosphere
set the mood for a remarkable and
entertaining event. Most remarkable of all
was the support for the event, which totaled
$158,000 in funds raised, nearly double the
previous year.
“Orthopedics has long been a source of
pride for McLaren Greater Lansing,” said
Eric Sturdy, Executive Director of McLaren
Greater Lansing Healthcare Foundation.
“McLaren Orthopedic Hospital has consistently
ranked in the top five percent among
peers nationally, and currently serves as a
center for national orthopedic research—in
partnership with Michigan State University.
Our dedication to our patients extends to
exploring new ways to treat them even better.”
Guests of the 2011 annual gala enjoyed a
night filled with hors d’oeuvres and a lavish
dine-around dinner spread at the Michigan
State University Spartan Club with music
provided by Lansing’s classic soul and R&B
band, Root Doctor.
Partygoers also enjoyed blackjack, roulette,
craps, and Texas Hold ‘Em, and then
cashed in their chips for a chance to win
either one night at Soaring Eagle Casino in
Mt. Pleasant or a $500 airfare voucher for
Sun Country Airlines.
Guests had the chance to bid on live auuction
prizes that included a fly-fishing trip
with Jeff “Bear” Andrews, an authentic Italian
dinner for eight at the historic home of
Salvatore and Marcella Durso, a corporate
luxury box at a Detroit Red Wings game,
and a four night trip to Riu Palace in Cancun,
Mexico.
“We have more than 550 physicians,
25 orthopedic surgeons, and speciallytrained
clinical staff who perform more than
10,000 inpatient and outpatient procedures
each year,” said Dennis M. Louney, Chair
of McLaren Greater Lansing Healthcare
Foundation’s Board of Trustees. “We strive
to provide our patients with healthier outcomes,
shorter hospital stays, experienced
and dedicated physicians, and complete pre
and post operative care. The proceeds from

Not only did the 2011 Gala enjoy financial
success and community praise, but “The
Hippest Party in Town” also won critical
acclaim. Central Michigan Public Relations
Society of America (CMPRSA) awarded the
foundation and Edge Partnerships the PACE
Pinnacle Award for Special Events in recognition
for the planning the gala with exemplary
skill, creativity and resourcefulness. <

Foundation Establishes
Nursing Scholarship Fund
McLaren Greater Lansing Healthcare
Foundation is excited to announce the development
of the Nursing Scholarship Fund.
The fund was established to support the
education of current and future nurses as
they work towards advanced nursing degrees.
A scholarship will be given annually
to current staff members enrolled in an accredited
nursing program.
“Nurses at McLaren Greater Lansing
are our greatest resource,” said Kris Allen,
Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of
Patient Care Services at McLaren Greater
Lansing. “We’re committed to providing
them every opportunity to advance.”
The fund was initiated by Sue Brennan, a
retired McLaren Greater Lansing registered
nurse who left behind a legacy of commitment
and nursing excellence.
A “raise your paddle” live auction held
during the annual gala recognized the Nursing
Scholarship Fund and raised more than
$7,000 benefitting the Fund.

Shakes Off Rain,
Golfs for Good
For nearly ten years, the Jack Breslin
Golf Classic, the foundation’s annual golf
outing benefitting oncology programs and
services at McLaren Greater Lansing, has
grown in reputation and success as one of
Lansing’s most sought-after annual outings.
2011 was no different as the event saw great
growth in fundraising and participation from
the previous year.
2011’s outing, held at Eagle Eye and
Hawk Hollow golf courses, did have one
small hiccup as play had to be suspended
due to inclement weather. “We can’t control
the weather, but we certainly made the best
of it,” said Eric Sturdy, Executive Director of
McLaren Greater Lansing Healthcare Foundation.
“Our participants are here to golf,
but more importantly they’re here to support
oncology services at McLaren Greater
Lansing. No amount of rain can stop them
from supporting what they’re passionate
about.”
Since 2007, the event has raised more
than $380,000, all contributing to the
study, diagnosis, treatment and cure of
cancer. <
Golf Classic
Helps Earn Breast
Care Center
Accreditation
McLaren Greater Lansing’s Breast Care
Center recently earned accreditation by the
National Accreditation Program for Breast
Centers (NAPBC) through the American
College of Surgeons. Only about 200 other
breast centers in 36 states are currently accredited,
and McLaren
Greater Lansing is the
first mid-Michigan
hospital to earn the
distinction.
Instrumental in
earning the accreditation was the purchase
of a new digital mammography approved cmyk colors
machine,
allowing patients to have a more comfortable
experience during an uncomfortable
procedure.
Funds raised from the Jack Breslin Golf
Classic assisted in purchasing the state-ofthe-art
equipment, further honoring Jack
Breslin’s passion for battling cancer and
demonstrating how that passion can make
a difference in the community.

State of the State
of Healthcare
On June 20, 2011, local business professionals
were invited to the annual State of
the State of Health Care Luncheon, organized
by the foundation’s Business Partners
in Health committee, to discuss healthcare
industry trends and learn what to prepare
for in 2012.
The event was designed to update the
capital region’s business and healthcare
professionals about the application of the
Affordable Health Care for America Act,
current trends in health care and how they
will impact the state. Further explored was
how state and federal health care trends will
impact small business owners, leaders of
large businesses and members of the local
workforce.
The luncheon also aimed to educate
business leaders about the McLaren Health
Care Corporation, addresses challenges
facing both health care providers and businesses
who offer health care coverage, and
highlight key dates for health care reform
bill requirements.
“The Business Partners in Health committee
is dedicated to being the catalyst
for promoting health and wellness educa-
tion to local businesses and the region’s
workforce,” said Scott Stewart, Chair of
the Business Partners in Health Committee
and member of McLaren Greater Lansing
Healthcare Foundation’s Board of Trustees,
“Events such as these are essential to
achieving this goal.”

PhD, Senior Project Manager at Public
Policy Associates, Inc.; Teresa Mikan, Vice

Annual Burger King
Fundraiser Provides
Generous Donations for
McRee Guest House
A special Burger King fundraiser supporting
McLaren Greater Lansing’s McRee
House yielded generous contributions over
the holidays. The four-week fundraiser accumulated
more than $7,000 in donations
during the 2010 holiday season.

Local Burger King Restaurants and their
customers in 2010 raised more than $7,000 in
support of the McRee Guest House..
Family Restaurants, their staff and all of
their many Burger King customers,” said
Eric Sturdy, Executive Director of McLaren
Greater Lansing Healthcare Foundation.
“Their support will help give families a
place to rest when sick loved ones are at
the hospital.”
The McRee Guest House, located on the
southwest corner of McLaren Greater Lansing’s
Greenlawn Campus provides a close,
comfortable “home away from home” for
the loved ones of critically ill McLaren pa-
tients. Largely staffed by volunteers, there’s
always someone to talk to who will listen
and provide a good dose of comfort. The
fundraiser helps provide overnight stays for
those who are unable to afford the minimal
per-night fare.
Thirteen Burger King restaurants
throughout the Lansing area, including locations
in Okemos, Perry and Holt, sold paper
McRee houses for $1 during the fundraiser.
Customers who participated received a
free Burger King beverage coupon and
their name displayed in the restaurant in
a paper McRee house. The Frandor Burger
King location managed by Tina Wroe sold
the most houses for the second consecutive
year, totaling $2,068.
In its 16-year history, McRee Guest
House has served more than 24,000 guests
from 75 Michigan counties, 50 states, and
families from Korea, Australia, Europe, and
India. Funds raised for the McRee Guest
House by local Burger King restaurants
have paid for nearly 7,500 overnight lodgings
for families unable to afford the stay
since Burger King began partnering with
McLaren Greater Lansing Healthcare Foundation
in 1991. <

Chi Family Donates
$50,000 To Update
Medical Library
The John W. Chi Memorial Medical
Library, a respected institution located
within McLaren Greater Lansing’s
Greenlawn Campus, received a
welcomed upgrade when Drs. Seong
and Ki Whan Oh Chi donated $50,000
to help fund renovations to the library.
As a resource of professional guidance
for physicians and medical students,
the John W. Chi Memorial Medical
Library is a cornerstone of McLaren
Greater Lansing. Utilized on a daily
basis, the library is a place for medical
professionals to seek resources to
assist with decision-making and a quiet
place to “get away” from the daily grind.
The library was dedicated as the
John W. Chi Memorial Medical Library
in September of 1976 in honor of
the Chi’s son, John, who passed
away that year in an automobile
accident. The plaque in his honor
reads, “His eloquence was in his
living and giving himself to others.”
The Chi’s donation will assist
renovations that haven’t taken place
since the 1970’s. Their gift and the
planned renovations will honor the
memory of their son by keeping
the medical library up-to-date and
welcoming for the McLaren Greater
Lansing medical community.

More Than $21,000
For Foundation
After a year of allowing his beard to
grow, former Michigan State University and
professional football star T.J. Duckett decided
to put his facial hair to good use. The
hometown athlete and philanthropist had
been growing his beard to raise funds and
awareness for McLaren Greater Lansing
Healthcare Foundation as part of Cuts for
Cancer, an effort of his community outreach
organization called Lunch With A Purpose.
The campaign ended with Duckett shaving
off his beard at an East Lansing event.
After Duckett was trimmed and shaved,
along with several other community members
who took on the challenge, he presented
Eric Sturdy, Executive Director of McLaren
Greater Lansing Healthcare Foundation,
with a check in the amount of $21,227.20
to benefit oncology services at McLaren
Greater Lansing.
“I was inspired to raise money for
[McLaren Greater Lansing] Healthcare
Foundation after my mother lost her battle
with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma,” Duckett
said. “It was clear to me during her treatment
that [McLaren Greater Lansing] truly cares.”
“T.J. is a great example of how passion,
be it in your professional or personal life,
can fuel change and make a meaningful
impact,” Sturdy said. “McLaren Greater
Lansing Healthcare Foundation, along with
the thousands of patients who are treated
at McLaren Greater Lansing, thank T.J. and
Lunch With A Purpose for their support.”
Lunch With A Purpose encourages volunteers
to contribute their time to a cause
during their lunch hours. Duckett hopes to
encourage others to get involved in their
passion by what he calls, “doing first, and
donating second.” <

awareness for the foundation.

Inception of Grateful
Patient Program
In 2011, McLaren Greater Lansing
Healthcare Foundation founded the Grateful
Patient Program to offer thankful guests
an opportunity to recognize individuals or
departments who have made a difference
during their time at McLaren.
The Foundation’s newly implemented
program offers two ways for patients or
family members treated at McLaren Greater
Lansing or McLaren Orthopedic Hospital to
extend thanks to the people who made an
impact during their stay. Participants can
share their story by writing a letter of appreciation
and/or making a donation to McLaren
Greater Lansing Healthcare Foundation.
“The doctors, nurses, and various other
staff members are the heart and soul of this
hospital. They work intensely to provide exceptional
care and a comfortable experience
for their patients,” said Eric Sturdy, Executive
Director of McLaren Greater Lansing
Healthcare Foundation. “This program is a
small but necessary step to making them
feel appreciated for all of their hard work.”
Patients’ appreciation and stories of
gratitude for McLaren caregivers have
poured in since the program’s inception. “I
have terrific memories of the care received
at [McLaren],” said Arlene H., “I felt cared
for both professionally and personally.”
Dianne W. also stated “when I was telling
my friends I was choosing to have treatment
for breast cancer at [McLaren Greater
Lansing], one of them clapped their hands
and said, ‘Oh you’ll find an angel around
every corner. Indeed, that has been the case
. . . every staff member has been helpful and
wonderful.”
The Foundation’s WeCare Committee,
which was also founded in 2011 and comprised
entirely of volunteer hospital staff,
organizes acts of kindness to recognize
the departments and individuals who have
received praise from grateful patients and
guests.
In addition to letters of thanks, grateful
patients and guests have donated $1,690 to
the foundation during the pilot year of the
program in recognition of the exceptional
care they received.

Planned Giving
Leaves Lasting
Impact
Jo Fredericks, former Vice President of
Human Resources at McLaren Greater
Lansing, and her husband Ed, have
established the Jo and Ed Fredericks
Scholarship Fund at McLaren Greater
Lansing. The Fund is intended to
assist students with an interest
and intent to pursue an identified
high-need career at McLaren Greater
Lansing but lack the financial ability.
The Fredericks support their
scholarship fund by making McLaren
Greater Lansing Healthcare
Foundation the owner and beneficiary
of a life insurance policy. In turn, the
Fredericks can receive a charitable
tax deduction for ongoing premiums
paid on the contract. The foundation
makes annual premium payments
on the policy while the Fredericks
make a tax deductible gift in that
amount to the foundation annually.
Through their unique efforts, the
Fredericks are able to provide a
lasting legacy for future healthcare
workers while benefiting from
tax deductible gifts now.
A gift of life insurance such as the
Fredericks gift—as well as planned
and estate giving—is a caring way to
leave behind a lasting legacy for the
future of health care of mid-Michigan.

In an effort to provide emergency
medical services with a place to decompress
and relax between calls,
McLaren Greater Lansing Healthcare
Foundation approved a grant to update
the EMS Lounge in the amount
of $3,310.
Updates to the lounge included
new paint, carpeting, cabinets and
an LCD television, much of which had
been donated by Dick, Jan and Rick
Wendorf.
The updates were also supported
by McLaren emergency department
physicians and staff, as well as senior
management, who wished to acknowledge
the tremendous work and
invaluable service that emergency
medical services provide.
Local emergency medical technicians
have expressed their thanks for
having a place to help manage their
long and stressful shifts.

A Letter from the
Executive Director
2011 was an eventful year. Ingham
became McLaren and McLaren Greater
Lansing Healthcare Foundation
enjoyed success throughout the
year. The Board of Trustees welcomed
new members and said goodbye
to old friends. Board members and
volunteers from the community and
hospital joined forces to help make
the Foundation’s vision a reality by
taking ownership over the many
committees the foundation has to offer.
I’d like to take a moment and
acknoweldge the members of those
committees. Their passion and
commitment toward our shared
vision of a healthier community
in the future truly forms a special
relationship with and in our community.
Community involvement and giving
is the cornerstone of any foundation,
and ours is no different. Should you be

The Tri-County Heroes Softball Tournament paid tribute to first responders.
McLaren Teams
Up With Local
First Responders
On May 21, McLaren Greater Lansing
and McLaren Greater Lansing Healthcare
Foundation partnered with local first responders
including police, fire, EMS and
emergency medicine from the tri-county
area for the second annual Tri-County Heroes
Softball Tournament.
Five teams consisting of local first
responders and one team consisting of
McLaren Greater Lansing employees competed
at Lansing’s Cottonwood Campground
to honor local first responders and
to thank our local EMS during EMS Week.
“Many of these courageous individuals
have risked their lives to protect the members
of this community,” said Eric Sturdy,
Executive Director of McLaren Greater Lansing
Healthcare Foundation. “We are proud
to honor their commitment and sacrifice.”
The tournament kicked-off with the
National Anthem, sung by Sgt. Mardella
Horhn of the Michigan State Police. Family
and friends of the players enjoyed cold
beverages, fruit and a barbecue generously
provided by Burger King Restaurants and
Stan Setas Produce, LLC.

Foundation Launches Facebook,
LinkedIn in 2011
2011 brought much change for McLaren
Greater Lansing Healthcare Foundation. In
the spirit of change, the foundation joined
the world of social media in April of 2011.
By launching a Facebook page and LinkedIn
group, the foundation has been able to
further communicate and generate support
by keeping the greater Lansing community
up-to-date on foundation news, events
and initiatives, as well as promote the
foundation’s mission and objectives.
