AN OPENING OFFER OF2008 BordeauxIn BondOrders by Website,Post and Fax onlyby 9pm,Tuesday 9th June, 2009Château Grand-Corbin-DespagneIllustrations by Julian KingA welcome surpriseThis is a vintage that has taken everyone by surprise. The best 2008 Clarets are very good indeed from first-growthsLafite and Latour, which have made one of their two top vintages of the decade (with 2005), to the superb leadingPomerols. Stalwarts like Léoville-Barton, Batailley and Angludet are great successes. Several properties in Pauillac, SaintJulien, Pessac-Léognan and the right bank have made outstanding wines: ripe yet fresh, generously flavoured, manyfacetedand fine. There are familiar names you will not find in our selection because they disappointed. On the otherhand we were delighted to find lovely wines at lower price levels, some listed for the first time. The story of 2008It is a surprise because last August in Bordeaux, as holidaymakers will remember, was cool, wet and decidedlyunpromising. July had been dry and sunny. But it was the lovely weather during the harvest, from mid-Septemberand throughout October, that made the vintage. All the major successes picked much later than usual, and thisexceptionally long growing season, enabling the fruit to achieve complete ripeness, finesse and complexity of flavour,is what has given the vintage its character. Scottish raspberries picked in September have especially good flavour forsimilar reasons. It is why a good British apple tastes better than one grown in north Italy or South Africa. This was a vintage that required patience and hard work on behalf of the growers. They had to adapt to the capriciousweather conditions during the year and wait until their fruit reached full maturity. As buyers, we needed to take timeto return and taste and retaste in both March and late April, and watch how wines were evolving, as the harvest hadbeen nearly a month later than usual. Many of the finest wines will benefit from a full decade of keeping before theyreach their best.WINE MERCHANT OF THE YEARCL0509/1 Decanter 2008May 2009

Price is a particularly important factor this year, because sterling continues to be so much weaker against the euro thanthis time last year. Fortunately, worldwide economic uncertainty has helped persuade many châteaux owners to reducetheir prices significantly from last year.2008 was also a successful year for many dry whites and some of the sweet wines of Sauternes and Barsac, thoughyields in both cases were low. There is a selection on page 10. To try a variety of 2008 Clarets, the six mixed cases onpage 11 offer a variety of wines at a range of prices.Any wines with prices yet to be confirmed (marked - Price TBC) will be listed onwww.thewinesociety.com/openingoffer immediately the price is released.Sebastian Payne MW, Chief Wine BuyerOrders will only be accepted online at www.thewinesociety.com/openingoffer, by post or by fax. This offer will close at 9pm, Tuesday 9th June, 2009.In-bond price, UK deliveredRef per six per dozen2008 CLARET IN BONDM1.
