New Hampshire Fish and Game DepartmentSaltwater fishing2012 DIGESTIt’s My Nature: 75 years of success,a partnership for American wildlifeOn September 2, 1937, President Franklin D. Rooseveltsigned the Federal Aid in Wildlife RestorationAct (now the Pittman-Robertson Wildlife RestorationAct). At a difficult time when the country was stillreeling from an economic crash, Senator Key Pittmanfrom Nevada and Congressman A. Willis Robertsonco-sponsored the Pittman-Robertson bill for wildliferestoration, a radical, unprecedented law that pavedthe way for a stable, secure program of wildlife conservationacross the nation, using an excise tax on sporting guns and ammunitionto fund future wildlife restoration. This Act fostered partnerships between federal and state fish and wildlifeagencies, the sporting arms industry, conservation groups, and sportsmen andsportswomen to benefit wildlife, and has been key to implementing what we callthe North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. In 1950, the Federal Aid inSport Fish Restoration Act (now the Dingell-Johnson Sport Fish Restoration Act)passed. Together, the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration program has contributedmore than $10 billion to fish and wildlife conservation in the U.S. – more thanany other single conservation effort. In 2012, we will proudly observe 75 years of the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restorationprograms and the success of working through partnerships to conserveand manage fish and wildlife and their habitats for the use and enjoyment ofcurrent and future generations, and supporting the North American Model ofWildlife Conservation. With your support, the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration program will continueto conserve habitat for fish and wildlife, and recreational opportunities foranglers, boaters, hunters, and shootersfor the future.
