Sodium BicarbonateSodium Hydrogen CarbonateBicarbonate SodaNaHCO3 Mol. Wt. 84.01monosodium hydrogen carbonate144-55-8Content Sodium Bicarbonate, when dried, contains not less than 99.0% of sodiumbicarbonate (NaHCO3).Description Sodium Bicarbonate occurs as white crystalline powder or crystallinelumps.Identification Sodium Bicarbonate responds to all tests for Sodium Salt and forBicarbonate as described in the Qualitative Tests.Purity (1) Clarity of solution Clear (1.0 g, water 20 ml).(2) Chloride Not more than 0.021% as Cl.Sample Solution Weigh 0.50 g of Sodium Bicarbonate, add 5 ml of diluted nitricacid (1 10), boil, cool.Control Solution 0.30 ml of 0.01 mol/l hydrochloric acid.(3) Carbonate Weigh 1.0 g of Sodium Bicarbonate, add carefully 20 ml of freshlyboiled and cooled water, and dissolve while shaking horizontally at 15 or below. Add2.0 ml of 0.1 mol/l hydrochloric acid, and add 2 drops of phenolphthalein TS. No pinkcolor develops immediately.(4) Ammonium salt Weigh 1.0 g of Sodium Bicarbonate, and heat. No odor ofammonia is evolved.(5) Heavy metals Not more than 10µg/g as Pb.Test Solution Weigh 2.0 g of Sodium Bicarbonate, dissolve in 5 ml of water and20 ml of diluted hydrochloric acid (1 4), and evaporate to dryness on a water bath.Dissolve the residue with 2.0 ml of diluted acetic acid (1 20) and about 30 ml ofwater, add water to make 50 ml.Control Solution Measure exactly 2 ml of Lead Standard Solution, add 2 ml ofdiluted acetic acid (1 20) and water to make 50 ml.(6) Arsenic Not more than 4.0µg/g as As2O3.Test Solution Weigh 0.50 g of Sodium Bicarbonate and dissolve in 3 ml of waterand 2 ml of hydrochloric acid.Apparatus Apparatus B.

Loss on Drying Not more than 0.25% (4 hours).Assay Weigh accurately about 2 g of Sodium Bicarbonate, previously dried, dissolve in 25 ml of water, and titrate with 1 mol/l sulfuric acid (indicator: 3 drops ofbromophenol blue TS). Soon before the titration reaches the endpoint, boil to expelcarbon dioxide, cool, and continue the titration.1 ml of 0.5 mol/l sulfuric acid = 84.01 mg of NaHCO3
