September 16 was <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cut-over <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first large automaticcrossbar exchange supplied by L M Ericsson to Australia, <strong>the</strong> 6300-line Toovvoomba exchange. Mr R VV C Swartz, M. P. for DarlingDowns District, presided at <strong>the</strong> inauguration. It is a paper-insulated, lead-covered multipleunit cable, 2040 pairs, 0.51 mm, and 82 mm outside diameter. Thedelivery also includes 100—1400 pair lead-shea<strong>the</strong>d cable. The photographshows a drum <strong>of</strong> PCL'T cable 2040 2 0.51 mm for shipmentto Hong Kong. The drum weighs 5000 kg.Mexicans ReceiveSwedish HonoursThe Knight Grand Cross <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Order <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Star wasawarded to <strong>the</strong> Mexican Minister <strong>of</strong>Communications, Walter C Buchanan,at a reception at <strong>the</strong> Swedish Embassyin Mexico City. In presenting <strong>the</strong>Order <strong>the</strong> Swedish ambassador spoke<strong>of</strong> Mr Buchanan's great contributionsto <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> Mexican tele<strong>com</strong>municationsand <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hospitalityalways extended to Swedes in Mexico,in <strong>the</strong> matter <strong>of</strong> which Mr Buchananwas a notable example. In his reply<strong>the</strong> latter expressed his appreciation<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fruitful cooperation betweenMexican and Swedish technicians overa period <strong>of</strong> decades, especially in <strong>the</strong>construction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country's telephonenetwork. The ceremony wasattended by representatives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>diplomatic corps and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mexicangovernment. Mr Buchanan and <strong>the</strong>Swedish ambassador Lennart Nylanderare seen in <strong>the</strong> photograph below.Mr Edward Hidalgo, for sevenyears chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> board <strong>of</strong>Compania Comercial Ericsson, L MEricsson's sales <strong>com</strong>pany in Mexico,has been awarded <strong>the</strong> Order <strong>of</strong> Vasa.Mr Hidalgo, who is a very able <strong>com</strong>merciallawyer, has for many yearswatched over <strong>the</strong> interests <strong>of</strong> Swedishfirms in Mexico and has on severaloccasions rendered valuable assistanceto <strong>the</strong> Swedish Embassy.
