The lower panel providesoutlets for bay and station trunks, with lamps for indicating when engaged,etc. The panels can be provided with a cover plate.Cover PlatesMainly for aes<strong>the</strong>tic reasons, <strong>the</strong> front <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bay is equipped with coverplates except where <strong>the</strong>re already is an enamelled front panel or wheremaintenance requirements introduce difficulties.The cover plates are held in place by brackets on <strong>the</strong> bayside test blocks,and when removed can easily be stacked. In <strong>the</strong> left-hand edge <strong>the</strong>y eachhave a slot which slips under a stud on <strong>the</strong> test block bracket, while on <strong>the</strong> right<strong>the</strong>re is a snap fastening (see fig. 8).Plates entirely cover <strong>the</strong> rear <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bay.Connectors and AccessoriesThe new mechanical design has also involved new designs <strong>of</strong> connectors,patch cords, fuses and o<strong>the</strong>r accessories. A few examples only <strong>of</strong> this arebriefly described below.Flat-contact Plugs and SocketsTo provide a flexible arrangement for unscreened connexions, gold-platedfork-shaped socket contacts are universally used; <strong>the</strong>se toge<strong>the</strong>r with someexamples <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir application can be seen in fig. 14.
