362 Sri Caitanya-caritamrta [Madhya-lila, Ch. 19"When one is completely free from all doubts and material attachments, he attainsthe neutral position called santa.".vihaya viayonmukhyarilnijananda-sthitir yata/:1atmana/:1 kathyate so 'trasvabhava/:1 sama ity asaupraya/:1 sama-pradhananarilmamata-gandha-varjitaparamatmataya krQejata santa-ratir mataThe santa-rati realization of Krl)a is in the neutral stage between the conceptionof impersonalism and personalism. This means that one is not very strongly attachedto the personal feature of the Lord. An appreciation of the greatness of theLord is called santa-rati. This is attachment not to the personal feature but to theimpersonal feature. Generally, one in this stage is attached to the Paramatmafeature of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.isvara/:1 sarva-bhatanamhrd-dese 'rjuna tithatibhramayan sarva-bhataniyantrarac;Jhani mayaya"The Supreme Lord is situated in everyone's heart, 0 Arjuna, and is directing thewanderings of all living entities, who are seated as on a machine, made of the materialenergy." (Bg. 18.61)On the strength of this statement from Bhagavad-gita, we can understand thatin the santa-rasa, a devotee sees the Lord's representation everywhere. Dasya-ratiis explained in the Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu (2.5.27) thus:svasmad bhavanti ye nyanaste 'nugrahya harer mata/:1aradhyatvatmika tearilrati/:1 pritir itiritatatrasaktikrd anyatrapriti-sarilhariQi hy asauWhen the Supreme Lord in His localized aspect is appreciated and a great devoteeunderstands his subordinate position, not only does he surrender to theSupreme Personality of Godhead, but, due to his subordinate position, he wishes
