545.8 On legal skills, we will be referring to the Mac Crate Report <strong>of</strong> USA(1992) which is the Report <strong>of</strong> the “Task Force on <strong>Law</strong> Schools and thePr<strong>of</strong>ession: Narrowing the Gap”, prepared by the American BarAssociation. This was followed by subsequent resolution <strong>of</strong> the ABAHouse <strong>of</strong> Delegates in Feb, 1994 and the Report on LearningPr<strong>of</strong>essionalism 1996 (Chicago). It is also necessary to refer to the studymade by the <strong>Law</strong> Society <strong>of</strong> England and Wales on ‘Preparatory Skills:Review <strong>of</strong> the Institute <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Studies (Auckland) 1990; the earlierReports, namely, Crampton Report on <strong>Law</strong>yer Competency (US) (1979)and the Carrrington Report on Training for Public Pr<strong>of</strong>essions <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Law</strong>(1971), Washington. <strong>The</strong> National <strong>Law</strong> School, Bangalore is said to haveprepared a new curriculum in 2001 based on the Mac Crate and Harvardcurriculum, with modifications suited for <strong>India</strong>n conditions.5.9 <strong>The</strong>re are 10 chapters in the Mac Crate Report in Parts I to III.Chapter 5 <strong>of</strong> the Report refers to the ‘Statement <strong>of</strong> Fundamental <strong>Law</strong>yersSkills and Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Values”’, Chapter 7 refers to ‘Pr<strong>of</strong>essionalDevelopment during <strong>Law</strong> School’, Chapter 8 to ‘Transition from <strong>Law</strong>Student to Practitioner, Chapter 9 to ‘Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Development after <strong>Law</strong>School’, Chapter 10 refers to the Need for a National Institute to Enhancethe process <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Development (seehttp://www.abanet.org/legaled/publications/onlinepubs/maccrate.html).5.10 Under chapter V(A) there<strong>of</strong>, the legal skills referred are (1) legalresearch, (2) factual investigation, (3) communication, (4) counselling, (5)negotiation, (6) skills required to employ or to advise a client about theoptions <strong>of</strong> litigation and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, (7) the
