ThePRIDEARCHBISHOP RUMMEL HIGH SCHOOLSUMMER <strong>2013</strong>NEW WINDOW WALLSWith his final drawings, architect Brian Faucheux,‘72, of Sizeler Thompson Brown Architects shows <strong>Archbishop</strong><strong>Rummel</strong> and Archdiocese of New Orleans leaders his company’s designs for a new exterior for the entire schoolcampus. Accompanied by associate architect and alumnus Mark Brupbacher, ’90, Faucheux is addressing theschool’s immediate concern of 50 year old, leaky window walls throughout the campus. The $2.7 million dollarproject should begin construction in early 2014.

The schoolis working with New Orleansarea business, medical, and legalprofessionals who will serve asadvisors for student projects, speakat the school, and also develop fieldexperiences that tie directly into theclassroom learning.Students will take the Law Studiesor Biomedical Sciences courses inaddition to the standard coursesrequired for state graduation andTOPS scholarship requirements.The four courses for the LawStudies program will consistof Speech and Debate in thestudent’s freshmanyear; Principles ofFree Enterprise as asophomore; Civil andCriminal Law for thethird year as juniors;and Forensic Sciencesin their fourth year asseniors.Through the LawStudies program,students will also learnhow to formulatepersuasive debates,produce oral andwritten arguments, establish andmanage enterprises, and explore theworkings of the justice system.The four courses for theBiomedical Sciences programwill consist of Principles of theTalking court room procedures to Cameron Dupuy, Josh Bienvenu, Alex Bienvenu, Justin Lorio,and Tyler Braud is Tulane Law school professor Jim Letten.Dr. Frank Smart, chief cardiologist at LSUHSC, explains aprocedure to freshmen (left) Ryan Powers, Mark Pittman, LukeLacoste, and Wyatt Vanlangendonck.Biomedical Sciences; Human BodySystems; Biomedical Innovation;and Medical Interventions. Studentswill explore concepts of humanmedicine and are introduced totopics such as physiology, genetics,microbiology and public health.“Through activities, likedissecting a heart, students examinethe processes, structures andinteractions of the human body –often playing the role of biomedicalprofessionals. FISHING RODEO AND FAMILY FESTThe official weigh-in for the annual Alumni Association’s Fishing Rodeo was moved tocampus this June and a huge crowd of fishermen and spectators filled the school campus.They were greeted by good food, inflatables for the kids, and great entertainment. All afternoon,fishermen brought their day’s catch to the weigh station before winners were announced.Many drawings of gifts were done all day but one of the most enjoyable was the awardingof 25 Raider fishing poles to kids in attendance. At the conclusion of Family Fest, freshmanDylan Pelicano was named the King Fisherman of <strong>2013</strong>.ATHLETIC HALL OF FAMEPrior to the Homecoming football game, threealumni were inducted into the school’s AthleticHall of Fame. The three honorees are (left) JoeBurnett, ’85, Jeff Lipari, ’96, and Jeff Winchester,’98. Burnett was a three sport letterman for theRaiders, playing football, track, and baseball. Lipariwas a two sport letterman and played baseballand basketball for <strong>Archbishop</strong> <strong>Rummel</strong>. RAIDER PRIDE DAYFollowing a morning prayer service, all<strong>Archbishop</strong> <strong>Rummel</strong> students, faculty,and staff boarded buses to begin their RaiderPride Service Day duties. Some headed todo service projects at schools, some droveto retirement homes, and some journeyedto parks and playgrounds for their work.When their tasks were completed, all felt asense of accomplishment following a greatday for the Raider community.6 :: <strong>Archbishop</strong> <strong>Rummel</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Alumni Association


CAREER DAYMore than 60 alumni returned to their alma mater for theAlumni Office’s annual Career Day. The alums gatheredfirst in the gym for coffee and breakfast items and then wereintroduced to the juniors and seniors by Mr. Donald Stout, ’83,alumni director. The alums then walked to their respectiverooms where they spoke to and answered questions from theRaider students. The morning concluded with a grand buffet inthe Faculty Dining Room compliments of Louisiana Lagniappe.YEARS OFSERVICEAt the final liturgy of the school year,longtime faculty members at <strong>Archbishop</strong><strong>Rummel</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> were recognized byschool officials. Principal Michael Scalcoread the names and accomplishments ofthe individual while President Brother GaleCondit, FSC, presented each a gift from theschool. Celebrity Waiters DinnerWhat a night!The annual Celebrity Waiters Lunch was transformed intothe Celebrity Waiters Dinner at the Hilton New OrleansAirport Hotel in mid-April. With a sold-out group of 36tables and 360+ guests, the dinner was a total success. The venue sparkled, thanks to Mr. andMrs. Randy Gervais and Royal Productions. A long list of silent and verbal items were availableas well as a parade of prizes, 50/50 chances, and a 10-restaurant package.The highlight of the night came when auctioneer Chuck Mutz officiated at a bidding war forfootball state championship merchandise between Dominick Impastato, ’97, and Lionel Smith,’87. Mutz managed to get two sets of the merchandise so both alums purchased their items withidentical $13,000 bids each. Again this year, the evening’s top waiter was First NBC’s AshtonRyan. A spirited Doug Mouton, WWL-TV sports director, was emcee for the evening. The <strong>2013</strong>Celebrity Waiters Dinner was chaired by faculty member and parent Ms. Charlene Wetzel.Next year’s Celebrity Waiters Dinner is scheduled for Saturday, March 22, 2014 at the AirportHilton Hotel.<strong>High</strong> bidder Dominick Impastato, ‘97 <strong>High</strong> bidder Lionel Smith, ‘87

GOLFFriday, May 17 was a great day to play in the annualRaider Alumni Golf Tournament. Held at ChateauEstates Golf Club, the tournament had a large numberof <strong>Archbishop</strong> <strong>Rummel</strong> alumni golfers beginningthe day with a great lunch before they headed to theChateau golf course. They played the course, facedchallenges, and enjoyed refreshments throughout thecourse. At course’s end, the golfers went inside theCountry Club for meal numbertwo as winners were named,prizes raffled, and friendshipswere rekindled. Once again,it was a great time to be an<strong>Archbishop</strong> <strong>Rummel</strong> alumnus.ALUMNI PRIESTSThe number of alumni answering God’s call topriesthood continues to grow as several <strong>Archbishop</strong><strong>Rummel</strong> graduates are entering the seminary or haverecently been ordained to serve the Church. On June 1,Travis Clark, ‘01, now Fr. Travis Clark, was ordained apriest by <strong>Archbishop</strong> Gregory Aymond at an ordinationceremony at St. Louis Cathedral. Two weeks earlier,alumni Charles Dussouy, ‘02, and Tim Hedrick, ‘00,were ordained transitional deacons by <strong>Archbishop</strong>Aymond. And one year ago, alums Kyle Sanders, ‘03,and Kurt Young, ‘05, were ordained as priests at theCathedral. Starting with the new school year, Fr. KurtYoung will be the firstalum sent back to serveas school chaplain. Other<strong>Archbishop</strong> <strong>Rummel</strong>alumni currently inseminary formationDeacons Tim Hedrick, ’00, andCharles Dussouy, ‘02are Chris Gros, ‘01, and Alex Albert, ‘06. They willbe joined by two other alumni who are entering theseminary this fall to prepare for the priesthood: KyleGeorge, ‘08, and Andrew Gutierrez, ‘11.SPORTS AWARDSAs the end-of-year school awards ceremonies continuedthrough May, athletes gathered in the Raider gym forthe annual Spring Athletic Awards Ceremony. Six differentteams were recognized by their head coaches and athletesreceived recognition, awards, and much applause. At theend of the ceremony, the top awards were named by Mr. PhilGreco, athletic director. CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMSThe just completed school year was a great one for Raider athletics. At the end of the school year, the schoolhockey team won the state championship by defeating the Gulf Coast boys’ hockey team in Lafayette, 5-4.Coach Travis Olivier, ‘02, and his hockey team received congratulations from the school.Earlier in the school year Coach Matt Caire, ’03, and his Raider bowling team repeated as state champions. Alsoin Lafayette, the defending state champs won via an 18-9 victory over Morgan City. As with the hockey team, theRaider bowlers received congratulations from the Raider family.In the beginning of the school year, the Raider football team enjoyed a perfect pre-playoff record and entered thestate playoffs as the number one team in state. With victories throughout the playoffs, the Raiders faced Barbe ofLake Charles for the 5A state championship. Before a massive Raider crowd in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, ’81alum Jay Roth’s Raiders stymied the Barbe Buccaneers, 35-14, and won the school’s first state football championship.WHAT A GREAT YEAR TO BE A RAIDER!!!The PRIDE, <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>2013</strong> :: 13


ENHANCEDACADEMICSCHOLARSHIPS<strong>School</strong> leadership at <strong>Archbishop</strong> <strong>Rummel</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> announced last school year a new, enhancedacademic scholarship program for new eighth and ninth graders. Brother Gale Condit, FSC, president,said the program will attract the brightest and finest elementary school students in the area to <strong>Archbishop</strong><strong>Rummel</strong>. Admissions Director Casey Cadella said for the <strong>2013</strong>-14 school year, 19 eighth and ninth gradershave earned the very lucrative academic scholarships and he is anticipating an even larger number ofacademic scholarships in the future as more and more families learn of the academic grants.LIVING WAY OF CROSSlong-standing <strong>Archbishop</strong> <strong>Rummel</strong> traditionA that took a short hiatus has returned tothe school campus in all its glory. On HolyThursday, the student body was treated to anoutstanding program produced by <strong>Archbishop</strong><strong>Rummel</strong> and <strong>Archbishop</strong> Chapelle students,faculty, and alumni. The living Way of the Crosswas portrayed by students for each station withsong and prayer, and a totally silent student bodytook in the solemnity of the program. At theconclusion, Fr. Pat Wattigny, chaplain, offereda benediction service as he exposed the BlessedSacrament to the Raider audience.’66 LUNCHESThe <strong>Archbishop</strong> <strong>Rummel</strong> charter class of 1966gathers most months for lunch at Chad’sBistro on West Esplanade. FSC 5 CORE MEALSTommy Cvitanovich, ’77, Drago’s Restaurant owner, talks with his dinner guests. Faculty member Matt Caire, ‘03To better inform members of the <strong>Archbishop</strong><strong>Rummel</strong> family about the five “Core Principles”of a Lasallian education, the school’s two ChristianBrothers on campus hosted a cross section of theschool’s faculty, students, parents and alumni, plusrepresentatives from the three other Lasallian schoolsin the area at two “Five Core” Dinners. Organized byBrother Gale Condit, FSC, school president, the twomeals treated guests to personal reflections on thefive Lasallian core principles, each represented by adifferent course.The meals for the Five Core Dinners were suppliedby Tommy Cvitanovich, ’77, owner of two localDrago’s Restaurants. Cvitanovich was assisted by theschool’s Student Ambassadors who served the adultmeal and by faculty members who served the studentmeal. STRAIGHT A, 4.0 LUNCHESAt the conclusion of each academic quarter,school leadership honors those students whohave excelled academically on their quarter reportcards. Those with 4.0 GPAs or better are treatedto a catered lunch in the Raider Room, whilethose students earning straight A’s on their reportcards have an off campus lunch. During therecent school year, they dined at Henry Shane’sCars of Yesteryear Museum, the Chifici Family’sDeanie’s Seafood, and the Impastato Family’sImpastato’s Restaurant.As it is each year, the current school year hasbeen a busy one for members of OperationHeadStart. The student and alumni volunteerskept a busy schedule of events both in NewOrleans and across the country. They work withat-risk kids, the elderly, and other individualsand groups with special needs. As HeadStartbroadens its reach, members hosted a group16 :: <strong>Archbishop</strong> <strong>Rummel</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Alumni Associationof students from St. Mary’s College <strong>School</strong> inBerkley, CA, as the guests did service workwith the St. Bernard Project. Finally, presentand former members of Operation HeadStartcelebrated the completion of its 20th year witha party in the Raider Room.
