On Distinguishing Virtue 17What is 'virtue as virtue'? Two kinds: skilful and unskilful virtue — theseare called 'virtue as virtue'. 1What is 'virtue as accumulation'? A good heart accumulates skilfulvirtue; a bad heart accumulates unskilful virtue. 2What is 'virtue as ending 1 ? A man ends unskilful virtue throughthe acquisition <strong>of</strong> skilful virtue; a man ends skilful virtue through theaccomplishment <strong>of</strong> sanctity. 3What is 'virtue as complete path <strong>of</strong> ending'? Namely, the four-foldright effort 1 — this is called 'virtue as complete path <strong>of</strong> ending'. The four-foldactivity is to be understood thus: It is called energy and is not real observance<strong>of</strong> virtue — this is named 'right effort'.FIFTH GROUP OF FOUR IN VIRTUEAnd again, there is a group <strong>of</strong> four in virtue: virtue <strong>of</strong> the rules-<strong>of</strong>-theorderrestraint, 5 virtue <strong>of</strong> the purity <strong>of</strong> livelihood, 6 virtue <strong>of</strong> faculty restraint, 7virtue connected with the requisites. 8What is 'virtue <strong>of</strong> the rules-<strong>of</strong>-the-order-restraint'? Here a bhikkhudwells, being restrained by rules-<strong>of</strong>-the-order restraint, is endowed with goodbehaviour and lawful resort, fears even a small fault and well trains himselfin the precepts in which he should be trained. 9 'Here' means in this Master'steaching. 'Bhikkhu' means good commoner. Also it means learner, learningender,unshakable one. 10 'Rules-<strong>of</strong>-the-order-restraint' means virtue, manifestation,beginning, activities, protection, restraint, sloughing and unbinding.This is the entrance into the doctrines. By this the Good Law 11 is accepted.This is the meaning <strong>of</strong> 'rules-<strong>of</strong>-the-order\ Not transgressing through bodilyand verbal action is 'restraint'. "Restrained' means accomplished in therules-<strong>of</strong>-the-order-restraint. 'Dwells' means guards the four postures. 'Isendowed with good behaviour and lawful resort':— (In his) there is goodbehaviour 12 and there is misbehaviour. 131. Cp. (a) M.
