The Five Methods 317THE SEVEN LATENCIESThe seven latencies are the latency of sense-desire, the latency of anger,the latency of conceit, the latency of views, the latency of uncertainty, thelatency of the desire for becoming and the latency of ignorance. 1 Here, thelatencies of views and uncertainty are destroyed through the Path of Streamentrance.The latency of sense-desire and the latency of anger are destroyedthrough the Path of Non-Return. The latency of conceit, the latency ofdesire for becoming and the latency of ignorance are destroyed through thePath of Saintship.THE EIGHT WORLDLY CONDITIONSThe eight worldly conditions are gain, loss, disgrace, fame, praise, blame,pain and pleasure. 2 Here, the resentment produced by the four kinds ofplaces one dislikes, is destroyed through the Path of Non-Return. Theinclination for the four kinds of places one likes, is destroyed through thePath of Saintship.THE NINE CONCEITSOne produces the conceit: "I am superior to others who are superior";or one produces the conceit: "I am equal to the superior ones"; or oneproduces the conceit: "I am inferior to the superior ones;" or one producesthe conceit: "I am superior to others who are like me;" or one produces theconceit: "I am inferior to others who are like me;" or one produces theconceit: "I am superior to those who are inferior;" or one produces the conceit:"I am equal to those who are inferior;" or one produces the conceit: "I aminferior to others who are inferior". 3 These nine conceits are destroyedthrough the Path of Saintship.bahujana-ahitdya bahujana-asukhdya bahujanassa anatthaya ahitdya dukkhdya devamanussanam.Evariipah ce tumhe dvuso vivdda-mulam ajjhattam vd bahiddha yd samanupasseyydtha,tatra tumhe dvuso tass' eva pdpakassa vivdda-mulassa pahdndya vdyameyydtha.Evarupan ce tumhe dvuso vivdda-mulam ajjhattam vd bahiddha vd na samanupasseyydtha,tatra tumhe dvuso tass' eva pdpakassa vivdda-mulassa dyatim anavassavdyapatipajjeyydtha.
