The Five Methods 315THE FOUR CORRUPTIONSThe four cankers are the canker <strong>of</strong> lust, <strong>of</strong> becoming, <strong>of</strong> views and <strong>of</strong>ignorance. 1 Here, the canker <strong>of</strong> views is destroyed through the <strong>Path</strong> <strong>of</strong>Stream-entrance; the canker <strong>of</strong> lust is destroyed through the <strong>Path</strong> <strong>of</strong> Nonreturn;the cankers <strong>of</strong> becoming and ignorance are destroyed through the<strong>Path</strong> <strong>of</strong> Saintship.THE FOUR KNOTSThe four knots are the knot <strong>of</strong> the group <strong>of</strong> covetousness, the knot <strong>of</strong>the group <strong>of</strong> ill will, the knot <strong>of</strong> the group <strong>of</strong> addiction to rites and ceremoniesand the knot <strong>of</strong> the group <strong>of</strong> the obsession that "this is the truth". 2Here, the knots <strong>of</strong> the group <strong>of</strong> addiction to rites and ceremonies andthe knot <strong>of</strong> the group <strong>of</strong> the obsession that "this is the truth" are cut throughthe <strong>Path</strong> <strong>of</strong> Stream-entrance. The knot <strong>of</strong> the group <strong>of</strong> ill will is cut throughthe <strong>Path</strong> <strong>of</strong> Non-return. The knot <strong>of</strong> the group <strong>of</strong> covetousness is cut through.the <strong>Path</strong> <strong>of</strong> Saintship.THE FOUR FLOODSThe four floods are the flood <strong>of</strong> lust, the flood <strong>of</strong> becoming, the flood <strong>of</strong>views and the flood <strong>of</strong> ignorance. 3THE FOUR YOKESThe four yokes are the yoke <strong>of</strong> lust, the yoke <strong>of</strong> becoming, the yoke <strong>of</strong>views and the yoke <strong>of</strong> ignorance. 4 These are destroyed as it was taughtbefore.THE FOUR CLINGINGSThe four clingings are the clinging <strong>of</strong> lust, <strong>of</strong> views, <strong>of</strong> addiction to ritesand ceremonies and <strong>of</strong> the theory <strong>of</strong> self. 5 Here, three clingings are destroyedin the <strong>Path</strong> <strong>of</strong> Stream-entrance.
