310 <strong>Vimuttimagga</strong>MISCELLANEOUS TEACHINGS*The following are the miscellaneous teachings here: insight, initial application<strong>of</strong> thought, joy, feeling, plane, faculty, emancipation, defilements, twoattainments in concentration.SERENITY AND INSIGHTInsight is <strong>of</strong> two kinds, namely, <strong>of</strong> the method <strong>of</strong> serenity and <strong>of</strong> bareinsight. Q. What is insight by way <strong>of</strong> serenity? Having acquired concentration,one overcomes the hindrances by concentration-strength, and oneunderstands form after one penetrates name by way <strong>of</strong> the factors <strong>of</strong> meditation,jhana. Here beginning with concentration one proceeds to insight.Bare insight: One overcomes the hindrances through understandingstrength.One discerns name after form has been penetrated by way <strong>of</strong> thebodily formations. Beginning with insight, he develops serenity. 1INITIAL APPLICATION OF THOUGHT ANDBARE INSIGHTBare insight is with initial application <strong>of</strong> thought. In the first meditation,jhana, the <strong>Path</strong> and the Fruit <strong>of</strong> insight are with initial application <strong>of</strong> thought.In the third meditation, jhana, insight and adoption are with initial application<strong>of</strong> thought, and the <strong>Path</strong> and the- Fruit are without initial application <strong>of</strong> thought.The <strong>Path</strong> in the plane <strong>of</strong> initial application <strong>of</strong>-thought fulfils the eight factors<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Path</strong>. In the plane that is without initial application <strong>of</strong> thought, sevenfactors remove consideration.* The section preceding this, owing to unintelligibility, is untranslated.1. (a) A.
