Conditioned by contact, threeaggregates arise. Conditioned by name-form, the aggregate <strong>of</strong> consciousnessarises. 1 When a man perceives these with the eye <strong>of</strong> wisdom, hebecomes familiar with the characteristics <strong>of</strong> arising through "condition".Q. How can one be well acquainted with the characteristics through "ownproperty" ? A. The formations arise, renewing themselves. It is like the successionin the flame <strong>of</strong> a lamp. When a man perceives this with the eye <strong>of</strong> wisdom,he becomes familiar with the characteristics <strong>of</strong> arising through "own property".One can see the characteristics <strong>of</strong> the Truth <strong>of</strong> Origin through cause and condition.One can see the Truth <strong>of</strong> 111 through the arising <strong>of</strong> thought, 2 throughcondition and through own property. One can see by means <strong>of</strong> characteristics<strong>of</strong> the being observed.* Thus one can be acquainted with the characteristics <strong>of</strong>arising through three ways.Q, How can one be well acquainted with falling through three ways?A. Through the falling away <strong>of</strong> cause, the falling away <strong>of</strong> condition and thefalling away <strong>of</strong> own property. Here through the falling away <strong>of</strong> craving,ignorance, and kamma, the failing away <strong>of</strong> the aggregates is fulfilled. 3 Whenone perceives this with the eye <strong>of</strong> wisdom, one becomes familiar withthe characteristics <strong>of</strong> falling away, through the falling away <strong>of</strong> condition.Through the falling away <strong>of</strong> nutriment, the falling away <strong>of</strong> the form-aggregateis fulfilled; 4 through the falling away <strong>of</strong> contact, the falling away <strong>of</strong> three aggregatesis fulfilled; through the falling away <strong>of</strong> name-form, the falling away<strong>of</strong> the aggregate <strong>of</strong> consciousness is fulfilled. 5 When a man sees this with theeye <strong>of</strong> wisdom, he becomes familiar with the falling away by way <strong>of</strong> the fallingaway <strong>of</strong> condition. The falling away <strong>of</strong> the formations is likened to recessionin the flame <strong>of</strong> a lamp. When a man sees this with the eye <strong>of</strong> wisdom, hebecomes familiar with falling away by way <strong>of</strong> own property. Here, throughthe falling away <strong>of</strong> the cause, one sees the Truth <strong>of</strong> Cessation. Owing tocharacteristics, (the first) seeing 6 is fulfilled. Through the grasping <strong>of</strong> thecharacteristics <strong>of</strong> the non-become, through the falling away <strong>of</strong> condition,through own property, through the destruction <strong>of</strong> views and through thecharacteristics <strong>of</strong> the Truth <strong>of</strong> 111, the first seeing is fulfilled.1.
