The Five Methods 289Thus discerning the three states <strong>of</strong> becoming, the five states <strong>of</strong> existence,the seven stations <strong>of</strong> consciousness, the nine abodes <strong>of</strong> beings, through extinction,fear and unreality, he investigates these. 1The discernment <strong>of</strong> Truth has ended.THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE RISE AND FALLThat yogin, having discerned the five clinging aggregates, applies the threecharacteristics to them, wishing for the happiness <strong>of</strong> being released fromphenomena. 2 And when the internal five clinging aggregates are graspedby way <strong>of</strong> the characteristics, he penetrates rise and fall thus: "All thesestates, not having been, arise; and having arisen, pass away". 3 Here, ingrasping (the aggregates) there are three kinds: defilement-grasp, concentration-grasp,insight-grasp.DEFILEMENT-GRASPHere, the infatuated commoner clings to and grasps willingly the sign <strong>of</strong>the defilements owing to mental reversal, and regards the world <strong>of</strong> sights,sounds, tangibles and ideas as blissful and permanent.
