The Five Methods 265depends on the place <strong>of</strong> birth, namely, a palace, habitation, mountain, tree,or river, according to destiny. The appropriate grasping-sign arises, and theman, leaning or sitting or lying (on his death-couch), grasps that. After theconsciousness which apperceives the past action or the action-sign or thedestiny or the destiny-sign ends, the last consciousness arises without a breakgradually through apperceptional consciousness. Only that action or actionsignor destiny or destiny-sign becomes the object <strong>of</strong> the basic resultant consciousness.Like the lighting <strong>of</strong> a lamp by a lamp, 1 or like fire issuing from aflame is re-Unking consciousness. 2In the womb <strong>of</strong> the mother, through the impurity <strong>of</strong> parents, thirtymaterial qualities are fulfilled by action <strong>of</strong> ten (?) sense-spheres. In themoment <strong>of</strong> decay, forty-six material qualities are fulfilled,*Thus consciousness conditions name-form. How, through the four groups? A. Ignorance and the formationsare divisions <strong>of</strong> the groups <strong>of</strong> action and defilement <strong>of</strong> the past. Consciousness,name-form, the six-sphered-sense, contact and feeling are divisions <strong>of</strong> thegroups <strong>of</strong> effect in the present. Craving, clinging and becoming are divisions<strong>of</strong> action, and defilement <strong>of</strong> the present. Rebirth, and decay-and-death aredivisions <strong>of</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> the future. Thus one should know through the fourgroupdivision.TWENTY MODESQ. How, through twenty modes ? A.
