228 <strong>Vimuttimagga</strong>MISCELLANEOUS TEACHINGSHere there are the following miscellaneous teachings: If one practisesone kind <strong>of</strong> concentration with the purpose <strong>of</strong> seeing forms through divinesight, he can only see forms. He cannot hear sounds. If he practises onekind <strong>of</strong> concentration for the purpose <strong>of</strong> hearing sounds through divine hearing,he can hear sounds only. He cannot see forms. If he practises concentrationfor the purpose <strong>of</strong> seeing and hearing, he can see and hear. If he practisesconcentration for the purpose <strong>of</strong> seeing, hearing and knowing others' thoughts,he can see, hear and know others' thoughts. If he practises concentrationfor the purpose <strong>of</strong> seeing in one direction, he cannot see in another direction,he cannot hear and he cannot know others' thoughts. If he practises concentrationmuch, he can see in all directions, he can hear and he can knowothers' thoughts. Five supernormal powers are worldly higher knowledge.These are possessed by the denizens <strong>of</strong> the form plane who are with the cankersand commoners with the fetters. Meritorious higher knowledge belongs toboth the learner and the commoner. To the Consummate One belongs noncharacterizablehigher knowledge.
