"Leavingbehind former joy and giief": Joy is the bliss <strong>of</strong> the mental properties. 2 Thisis the leaving behind <strong>of</strong> these.Q. It is said, "having abandoned pleasure and pain, leaving behindgrief". Where were these abandoned and left behind? A. They wereabandoned and left behind at the access moments <strong>of</strong> the meditation, jhana.The Buddha taught the removal <strong>of</strong> pain in this fourth meditation, jhana..Q. Where does the faculty <strong>of</strong> pain that has arisen cease entirely? A. TheBuddha taught the bhikkhus thus: "In the first meditation, jhana, separationfrom sense-desires is fulfilled. There the faculty <strong>of</strong> pain which has arisenceases entirely". 3 Q. Why does the faculty <strong>of</strong> pain cease entirely in the firstmeditation, jhana! A. Because <strong>of</strong> the fullness <strong>of</strong> joy, there is bodily ease. 4Because <strong>of</strong> bodily ease, the faculty <strong>of</strong> pain is ended, i.e., through transcending,it is abandoned. Therefore, in the first meditation, jhana, the faculty <strong>of</strong> painis removed. In the second meditation, jhana, the faculty <strong>of</strong> grief is removed.According to the teaching <strong>of</strong> the Buddha, the removal <strong>of</strong> the faculty <strong>of</strong> griefis thus: "Where does the faculty <strong>of</strong> grief that has arisen cease entirely? Here,bhikkhus, initial.and sustained application <strong>of</strong> thought are stilled, and heabides in the attainment <strong>of</strong> the second .meditation, jhana. Here, the faculty<strong>of</strong> grief which has arisen ceases entirely". 5 Why does the faculty <strong>of</strong> grief,cease in the second meditation, jhana! If a man has initial and sustainedapplication <strong>of</strong> thought for long, his body and mind become negligent. Ifhis mind becomes negligent, the faculty <strong>of</strong> grief arises immediately, in thesecond meditation, jhana, initial and sustained application <strong>of</strong> thought arestilled. In the third meditation, jhana, the faculty <strong>of</strong> bliss is removed. TheBuddha taught thus: "Where does the faculty <strong>of</strong> bliss which has arisen ceaseentirely?
