We Honor Veterans: A Mission to Serve 

“Honor and serve veterans in life and memorialize them in 

death for their sacrifices on behalf of the Nation.” 

- Goal Three of The Five Goals of the Veterans Affairs Department.

Americans is a veteran. As 

part of a national initiative 

to improve end-of-life 

care for those who have served our 

country, Hospice & Community 

Care is proud to be a Partner with 

We Honor Veterans, a pioneering 

program of the National Hospice and 

Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) 

in collaboration with the Department 

of Veterans Affairs (VA). This program 

is focused on respectful inquiry, 

compassionate listening and grateful 

acknowledgment of the veterans in 

our care. 

As a Partner, Hospice & Community 

Care will build professional and 

organizational capacity to provide 

quality care for veterans and their 

families; strengthen partnerships with 

VA hospitals and systems; and, most 

importantly, increase access to quality 

hospice and palliative care for veterans 

in our service area. By recognizing 

their unique needs, Hospice & 

Community Care can accompany 

and guide America’s veterans and 

their families through their life stories 

toward a more peaceful ending. 

More than 800,000 veterans in 

the United States are coping with 

advanced serious illness and more 

than 640,000 of these men and 

women will die in 2012. Only four 

percent of these veterans will die in 

the care of a VA. 

“This statistic reflects the great need 

for hospices and VA facilities to come 

together so no veteran dies alone,” says 

Tracey Wheatley, RN, CHPN, Hospice 

Director of Access. “America’s veterans 

have done everything asked of them in 

their mission to serve our country and 

we believe it is our mission to now 

care for them with the respect, comfort 

and compassion they deserve.” 

We Honor Veterans has established 

four program levels, and Hospice 

& Community Care recently 

obtained Level 1 status by providing 

in-service trainings and collaborating 

with a number of veteran’s facilities, 

reflecting the organization’s 

commitment to the program. 

Wheatley is spearheading the 

initiative and says the goal is for 

the organization to reach Level 2 by 

the end of this year. Level 2 focuses 

on providing education for staff 

to identify veterans, including an 

initiative requiring that all incoming 

Hospice patients be asked questions 

regarding military service to identify 

them as veterans. These questions will 

also allow for staff to address issues 

of service-related illnesses or injuries, 

exposure to health risks unique to 

each war, POW experience, posttraumatic 

stress and more. Hospice 

& Community Care can also assist 

families in accessing information on 

VA benefits and resources. 

“Aging veterans have unique clinical, 

psychological and spiritual needs 

at end of life as they have endured 

unique experiences in their lifetimes,” 

says Wheatley, “But many veterans 

have never before discussed what 

they saw and had to do with their 

families.” Wheatley adds that 

stoicism, a common veteran trait, 

prevents many seriously ill veterans 

from seeking the medical assistance 

and pain relief they need. 

Vets Serving Vets 

Hospice & Community Care plans to 

initiate a Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteer 

Program, aimed at providing We 

Honor Vets-specific training for 

volunteers who were veterans and 

pairing them with Hospice patients 

who have been identified as veterans. 

“These volunteers will have the unique 

ability to relate and connect with each 

patient,” says Wheatley, “creating 

camaraderie and an environment 

open to healing and life review. This 

relationship, in turn, can prove 

beneficial for both the patient and 

volunteer.”

Pediatric 

Palliative Care 

When Children Need Help 

When parents find themselves 

faced with the serious 

illness or imminent death 

of their child, days, months and 

sometimes years can be tragically filled 

with tears, fears, anger, grief and guilt. 

Pediatric palliative care is an emerging 

specialty that can provide vital comfort 

and support for both pediatric patients 

and their families during this most 

challenging time. 

According to the American Academy 

of Pediatrics, 53, 000 children in the 

United States die every year from 

trauma, lethal congenital conditions, 

extreme prematurity, 

heritable disorders, 

or acquired illness. 

Palliative care is 

available at any stage, 

whether the illness is 

curable, chronic or 

life-threatening, and 

can be provided along with curative 

treatment. Pediatric palliative care 

focuses on achieving the best possible 

quality of life for children living with 

and dying from their illness, with 

attention paid to pain and symptom 

management. It also seeks to ensure 

that bereaved families are able to 

remain functional and intact. The 

age range of pediatric palliative care 

patients may be from newborns to 19 

years of age and care can be provided 

where the patient lives. 

Palliative care professionals work 

with physicians, specialists and family 

members to coordinate care within the 

patient’s and family’s goals. Hospice 

& Community Care’s Palliative 

Medicine Consultants team consists 

of certified palliative care physicians 

and nurses and social workers who 

address physical, emotional, spiritual 

and social concerns that arise with 

advanced illness. This team includes 

Emily Martin, RN, and Barbara Cox, 

RN, who are both certified in pediatric 

palliative care—

of only five who 

are certified in 

Pennsylvania and 

96 in the country. 

This initiative 

began in 2004 as a result of a $12,000 

grant made by Hospice & Community 

Care’s Women’s Giving Circle during 

its very first funding cycle. The 

funding was directed towards a 

Pediatric Palliative Care Conference 

conducted by Hospice for members of 

the medical community. In 2010, the 

Women’s Giving Circle also funded 

furnishings and equipment to easily 

convert an Inpatient Center room for 

a pediatric patient. The grant funded 

a crib, bassinet and children’s themed 

coverings for a temporary screen to 

transform the room into a family and 

child-centered atmosphere, meeting all 

healthcare standards. 

“Children deserve to have palliative 

and hospice care just as the adult 

population does,” says Susan Young, 

Hospice & Community Care Vice 

President of Patient Care. “No family 

deserves to go through this alone.” 

Effective pediatric palliative care also 

provides support for caregivers. The 

time course of pediatric illnesses can 

vary, sometimes extending over years, 

making caregiver support critical. 

“A child facing serious illness or 

end of life impacts not only parents, 

siblings and grandparents, but it 

also has a ripple effect on friends, 

schools and sports teams,” says Patti 

Anewalt, Ph.D., Director of Hospice 

& Community Care’s Pathways Center 

for Grief & Loss. “That’s why it is 

imperative that pediatric palliative care 

provide support to all those affected.”

Mount Joy Inpatient Center Named 

Bob Fryer 

& Family 

Inpatient Center 

A 

special ceremony was held 

in October in recognition of 

the significant service Robert 

L. Fryer, Jr. has provided to 

Hospice & Community Care. The 

inpatient center in Mount Joy was 

officially named the “Bob Fryer & 

Family Inpatient Center” on October 

8, in honor of Fryer’s tremendous 

commitment to the organization. 

“This is truly a great honor,” Fryer 

told ceremony attendees. “It is both a 

privilege and a pleasure to work for 

such a wonderful organization.” 

A Financial Advisor for RBC Wealth 

Management, Fryer has a long history 

with Hospice, both personal and 

professional. 

“Like many of you,” Fryer shared, “I 

have experienced Hospice care for a 

loved one.” Fryer’s sister-in-law was 

cared for both at home and at the 

Inpatient Center in Lancaster, where 

she passed. Fryer also has had a 

National 

Hospice

number of friends 

who have received 

Hospice care.

and caring is truly 

exceptional,” 

Fryer said. 

Fryer has served 

on numerous 

Hospice committees, including serving 

as a member of the Hospice Board of 

Directors for nine years, a member 

and chairperson of both the Finance 

and Investment Committees and as a 

member of the Executive Committee, 

the Strategic Planning Committee and 

the 401K Committee. 

“Bob has devoted hundreds of hours to 

help develop and implement a strategy 

to finance the Mount Joy facility,” said 

Steve Knaub, Hospice & Community 

Care President & CEO. The Mount 

Joy facility was opened in 2008 and 

houses both the Bob Fryer & Family

The Inside Scoop on Giving 

More than 75 years ago, 

Armor Frey sold bottles of 

milk out of the back of his 

touring sedan to neighbors 

in the western side of Lancaster 

County, near Turkey Hill. In 1947, 

Glenn, Emerson and Charles Frey 

bought their father’s business and the 

little dairy thrived on their hard work. 

Today people all over the country are 

familiar with their Turkey Hill products 

“Imported from Lancaster County.” 

Following the family legacy, Quintin 

Frey, Armor’s grandson, is now 

president of Turkey Hill Dairy. 

From supporting local non-profits 

to providing aid to earthquake and 

tsunami victims in Japan, Frey is often 

at the lead when it comes to giving and 

caring about the community. 

“Growing up in a close family with 

many strong role models, I learned from 

a very young age about the importance 

of helping others in a time of need,” 

said Frey. “As my mother used to say, 

‘To whom much is given, much is 

required.’” 

Frey was personally impacted by 

Hospice a number of years ago, when 

his mother received care from the Home 

Hospice team. 

“Hospice & Community Care impacts 

so many families at a time when they 

need real support in their 

lives,” said Frey. “Hospice 

provides the expertise and 

compassion of people who 

have been through this 

difficult time and serves as a 

reassuring guide.”

than $380,000, our second highest total 

in 28 years,” says Steve Knaub, Hospice 

& Community Care President and CEO. 

“We are grateful for their long-term 

commitment which directly impacts 

patients and families in need of 

our care.” 

Turkey Hill Dairy was also awarded the 

2012 Pennsylvania Hospice Network 

Community Support Award, after 

being nominated by Hospice & 

Community Care, for their ongoing 

support of the hospice mission. 

Turkey Hill Dairy continues to lead the 

community in terms of its corporate 

involvement and helps to encourage 

other community businesses to also 

lend their support to our Auction, 

which has developed its own Lancaster 

County following.

expressing gratitude to their 

favorite charitable organizations

Dick and Ellie Bard, retired educators 

and long-time Manheim Township 

residents, believe in Hospice & 

Community Care. “We’ve seen the 

solace and comfort Hospice has 

brought to many friends through 

hospice care and bereavement 

support,” they both shared. 

Dick and Ellie recently joined the 

Evergreen Circle of Friends, a group 

of individuals who have named 

Hospice & Community Care in their 

estate plan. Members of the Evergreen 

Circle will help to ensure the future of 

Hospice & Community Care and will 

preserve and enhance quality end-oflife 

care for years to come. 

“We encourage individuals to share 

with us that they have named Hospice 

in their estate plan,” says Ginjr 

Robinson, Special Gifts Manager. “It 

enables us to personally thank our 

contributors for their commitment 

which, in turn, will encourage others 

to consider providing a gift of comfort 

and care.” 

“Individuals can impact the lives of 

patients and families in the community 

through both short- and long-term 

service,” says Dick. “Short-term service 

can be achieved by volunteering time 

and talent and through monetary gifts. 

Long-term service requires planning to 

continue to satisfy the future needs of 

those living in the community.” 

“This,” Dick continues, “is achieved 

through estate planning. What a 

wonderful way to perpetuate the 

future of Hospice & Community Care 

by designating a portion of one’s estate 

to this caring and loving institution.” 

According to Ginjr Robinson, 

charitable gifts are generally the result 

of finding what donors refer to as “the 

right fit.” All gifts made to Hospice & 

Community Care may be designated 

either in memory of a loved one or in 

honor of a special family member or 

friend who is living.

Did you know one out of every 20 children will lose a parent before 

the age of 18? Even more children will experience additional losses 

through the death of a sibling, grandparent, teacher or friend. 

Children’s Grief Awareness Day, Thursday, November 15, provides an 

opportunity to raise awareness of the painful impact the death of a loved one 

has on the life of a child. 

Providing grief support to children who experience the death of a loved 

one can make all the difference in the life of that child. You can show your 

support and spread the word by wearing blue on November 15. Learn

President’s Letter 

We are so fortunate to be surrounded by such 

a supportive, generous community. As you 

have read throughout this issue, thousands 

of individuals have provided gifts to Hospice & 

Community Care in so many ways—each of which 

touches the lives of patients and families in our care. 

American veterans have given all of us the gift of 

service to our country. With one out of every four 

dying Americans being a veteran, we now have the 

responsibility of providing them with the gift of 

care—along with the dignity and compassion they 

deserve—and have expanded our services with the 

“We Honor Veterans” Program. 

Our Pediatric Palliative Care team provides an immeasurable gift to pediatric 

patients and their families facing this unimaginable challenge. 

We are all proud to announce the naming of the Inpatient Center in Mount Joy: 

The “Bob Fryer & Family Inpatient Center,” recognizing the immeasurable gift 

of time, talent, resources and experience given to us over a number of years by 

Bob Fryer. His gifts have made a major impact on the Mount Joy facility, our 

organization as a whole, and most definitely on those in our community in need of 

our care. 

Turkey Hill Dairy, a long-time Hospice supporter, has been instrumental in the 

ongoing success of the Labor Day Auction. As a continuing Presenting Sponsor, 

their gift to the hospice mission is, literally, award-winning.
