(Greenwood, 2000—Electronic communication)<strong>3.7</strong>.2.4 Remote Sprint Launch Site 1—Hazardous Materials <strong>and</strong>Hazardous Waste ManagementThe relevant aspects of <strong>hazardous</strong> <strong>materials</strong>/<strong>waste</strong> management includethe applicable regulatory procedures for <strong>hazardous</strong> <strong>materials</strong> usage <strong>and</strong><strong>hazardous</strong> <strong>waste</strong> generation, <strong>and</strong> management programs for existing<strong>hazardous</strong> <strong>waste</strong>-contaminated sites within areas potentially affected bythe NMD program. The ROI for <strong>hazardous</strong> <strong>materials</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>hazardous</strong> <strong>waste</strong>management includes Remote Sprint Launch Site 1 for general operations<strong>and</strong> those areas where potential NMD construction activities could occur.Hazardous Materials ManagementRemote Sprint Launch Site 1 is an inactive site that receives routinemaintenance by a small caretaker staff that operates from the <strong>Missile</strong> SiteRadar. Hazardous <strong>materials</strong> used as part of the maintenance activitiesinclude paint solvents, thinners, <strong>and</strong> starter fluids.All underground storage tanks have been removed from the RemoteSprint Launch Sites (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 1991—UndergroundStorage Tank Closure Report, SRMSC).Hazardous Waste ManagementRemote Sprint Launch Site 1 is in caretaker status, <strong>and</strong> little or no<strong>hazardous</strong> <strong>waste</strong> is being generated. Any <strong>hazardous</strong> <strong>waste</strong> generated aspart of maintenance activities is disposed of offsite in accordance withapplicable regulations.Pollution PreventionBecause the site is currently inactive, there are no pollution preventioninitiatives.Installation Restoration ProgramThere are no known <strong>hazardous</strong> <strong>waste</strong> contaminated sites at RemoteSprint Launch Site 1. Water removed from the Remote LaunchOperations Building in 1991 did not indicate the presence of anycontaminates. No further investigation is planned for these facilities.Water may exist in some of the Sprint Silos. Current plans are for arepresentative number of silos to be investigated. If water is present, itwould be sampled <strong>and</strong> analyzed. If any contamination is discovered,consultation with the appropriate agencies would occur to determine3-222 NMD Deployment Final EIS
