w 74They are also called rèpŒvacara jhŒnas because they are capableof producing rebirth in the rèpŒvacara world. But here we are notencouraging the development of these jhŒnas with the intention toattain rebirth in the rèpŒvacara world, but for the purpose of usingthem as a basis for developing insight meditation. If you have been able to develop and attain the fourth jhŒna byusing the colour of bones that are external you will then be able toalso develop in a similar way the brown kasiöa based on the hairs ofthe head that are external, the yellow kasiöa based on fat or urinethat is external, and the red kasiöa based on the blood that is external. When you have succeeded in doing that then you can also try todevelop the different colour kasiöas based on the colour of flowers. All flowers that are blue, brown, or black are calling out and invitingyou to practise blue kasiöa. All flowers that are yellow are callingout and inviting you to practise yellow kasiöa. All flowers that arered are calling out and inviting you to practise red kasiöa. All flowersthat are white are calling out and inviting you to practise white kasiöa.Thus for a skilled meditator whatever he sees that is living or inanimate, internal or external, is able to be used as an object to developconcentration and insight. If you have attained the fourth jhŒna based on the white kasiöa asdescribed above then you will now be able to use that attainment toeasily develop the four protection meditations beginning with thedevelopment of loving-kindness meditation. But just before we describehow to do this we will briefly describe the other kasiöa meditationsand the arèpa jhŒnas.Ten KasiöasThere are ten kasiöas taught by the Buddha in the pŒli texts. They consist of four colour kasiöas plus six more the earth kasiöa,water kasiöa, fire kasiöa, wind kasiöa, space kasiöa, light kasiöa.
