When you can do this you should start <strong>to</strong> try<strong>to</strong> discern the five jhŒna fac<strong>to</strong>rs of vitakka, vicŒra, p´ti, sukha, andekaggata one at a time. <strong>The</strong>n with continued practise you will beable <strong>to</strong> discern them all <strong>to</strong>gether at once.1. vitakka = initial application of the mind; is the directing and placingof the mind on the object of the paÊibhŒga nimitta.2. vicŒra = sustained application of the mind; is the sustained keepingof the mind on the object of the paÊibhŒga nimitta.3. p´ti = joy and liking for the paÊibhŒga nimitta.4. sukha = pleasant feeling or happiness associated with experiencingthe paÊibhŒga nimitta.5. ekaggata = one pointedness of mind on the paÊibhŒga nimitta.When you are just beginning <strong>to</strong> practise jhŒna then you shouldpractise <strong>to</strong> enter jhŒna for a long time and not spend so much timediscerning the jhŒna fac<strong>to</strong>rs (jhŒna aºgas). You should practise masteryof the first jhŒna. <strong>The</strong>re are five kinds of mastery:1. Mastery in adverting; being able <strong>to</strong> discern the jhŒna fac<strong>to</strong>rs afteremerging from jhŒna.2. Mastery in attaining; being able <strong>to</strong> enter jhŒna whenever youwish <strong>to</strong>.3. Mastery of resolve; being able <strong>to</strong> stay in jhŒna for as long a time asyou determine <strong>to</strong> stay.4. Mastery in emerging; being able <strong>to</strong> leave the jhŒna at the time youdetermine <strong>to</strong> emerge.5. Mastery of reviewing; being able <strong>to</strong> discern the jhŒna fac<strong>to</strong>rs.Adverting and reviewing both occur in the same mind door process(manodvŒrav´thi). Adverting is performed by the mind dooradverting consciousness (manodvŒrŒvajjana) which in this casetakes as its object one of the five jhŒna fac<strong>to</strong>rs such as vitakka. Reviewingis performed by the four or five reviewing javana
