w 36ond is to see the causal arising and ceasing of formations (paccayato). Each of these again is also divided into three parts:1. Momentary arising, momentary passing away, momentaryarising and passing away.2. Causal arising, causal ceasing, causal arising and ceasing. To begin there is the brief method of discerning arising andpassing away of formations. To develop this the meditator firstdiscerns the momentary arising of mentality and matter, the fiveaggregates, the twelve bases, the eighteen elements, the four nobletruths, or dependent origination, internally and externally in thepast, present, and future. He then discerns the momentary arisingand passing away of these and apply the three characteristics tothem. This brief method is based on seeing the momentary arisingand ceasing of formations. To develop the detailed method the meditator has to see boththe momentary arising and passing away of mentality and matter, and the causal arising and passing away of the five aggregates, thetwelve bases, the eighteen elements, the four noble truths, ordependent origination.Firstly the meditator discerns again and again the momentaryarising of dhammas and the cause of the arising of those samedhammas. For example in the case of matter he discerns the causal arisingof matter by seeing that according to the method of DependentOrigination:1. The arising of ignorance causes the arising of matter originatedby kamma.2. The arising of craving causes the arising of matter originated bykamma.
