w 22Origination the round of kamma refers <strong>to</strong> kamma formations andkammabhava, the round of defilements refers <strong>to</strong> ignorance, cravingand clinging, and the round of results refers <strong>to</strong> consciousness, mindand matter, the six sense bases, contact, and feeling.For example, in the case of making an offering of candles,flowers, or incense in front of a Buddha image and making a wish<strong>to</strong> be reborn as a monk.<strong>The</strong>n in this case ignorance is the wrong knowledge thinkingthat "monk" is a reality, craving is the desire, and longing for a lifeas a monk, and clinging is the attachment <strong>to</strong> a life as a monk. <strong>The</strong>sethree: ignorance, craving, and attachment are all found <strong>to</strong>gether inthe consciousness that makes up the round of defilements (kilesavatta).If the medita<strong>to</strong>r made an offering of candles, flowers, or incensein front of a Buddha image and instead of making a wish <strong>to</strong> bereborn as a monk, had made a wish <strong>to</strong> be reborn as a woman.<strong>The</strong>n in that case the ignorance is the wrong knowledge thinkingthat "woman" is a reality, craving is the desire, and longing for alife as a woman and clinging is the attachment <strong>to</strong> a life as a woman.In both of these examples kamma formations (saºkhŒrŒ) are thewholesome intentions of offering of either candles, flowers, orincense in front of a Buddha image and kamma is the kammicforce associated with the kamma formations. <strong>The</strong>se two are bothfound in the consciousnesses that make up the kamma round(kamma vatta) of Dependent Origination.When the medita<strong>to</strong>r is able <strong>to</strong> discern the mentality and matterof the defilement round and the kamma round in the recent pastthen he goes back in time a little further, <strong>to</strong> sometime previous <strong>to</strong>that offering and discerns the mentality and matter present at thattime in the same way. <strong>The</strong>n after having discerned the mentality
