w 17<strong>The</strong>n several moments of bhavaºga consciousness arise.<strong>The</strong>n if a wholesome mind door thought process of the sensualplane arises with the same object as the eye door process thenthere occurs mind door adverting consciousness(manodvŒravajjana) in which the medita<strong>to</strong>r can discern 12 typesof mentality.<strong>The</strong>n there occurs 7 impulsion consciousnesses (javana citta)in which the medita<strong>to</strong>r can discern either 34, 33, or 32 types ofmentality.<strong>The</strong>n there occurs 2 registration consciousnesses (tadaramanacitta) in which the medita<strong>to</strong>r can discern either 34, 33, or 32 typesof mentality.After discerning this the medita<strong>to</strong>r starts <strong>to</strong> discern all thedifferent types of mentality that occur in every consciousness inthese eye door and mind door processes beginning with eitherconsciousness, contact, or feeling and then discerning one by oneeach of the other types of mentality until he can discern all mentalitythat is present in each consciousness in both processes.<strong>The</strong>n after the medita<strong>to</strong>r can discern these processes and thementality present there in the case of the eye base he continues <strong>to</strong>discern the same in a similar way in each of the other four sensebases; the ear, the nose, the <strong>to</strong>ngue, and the body. So by this stagehe will have developed the ability <strong>to</strong> discern the mentalityassociated with wholesome consciousnesses.<strong>The</strong>n next after that the medita<strong>to</strong>r needs <strong>to</strong> learn how <strong>to</strong> discernthe mentality in unwholesome consciousnesses. To be able <strong>to</strong> dothis he simply takes the same objects as he did in the examplesgiven earlier and pays unwise attention <strong>to</strong> each of them.When the medita<strong>to</strong>r attains this stage in meditation he has
