<strong>The</strong>n after that there occurs one access consciousness (upacŒra)in which he can discern 34 types of mentality.<strong>The</strong>n after that there occurs one adaptation consciousness(anuloma) in which he can discern 34 types of mentality.<strong>The</strong>n after that there occurs one change of lineage consciousness(gotrabhu) in which he can discern 34 types of mentality.<strong>The</strong>n after that there occurs an uninterrupted sequence of jhŒnaimpulsion consciousnesses (jhŒna javana) in which he can discern34 types of mentality.To discern this the medita<strong>to</strong>r must first enter in<strong>to</strong> the first jhŒnaand then after arising from that jhŒna he can then observe thatpreviously occurring jhŒna mind door process. He then begins <strong>to</strong>observe each of the different functional consciousnesses in the firstjhŒna mind door process and discern all the types of mentality tha<strong>to</strong>ccur in each functional consciousness whether it be 12 or 34.After the medita<strong>to</strong>r can discern all the types of mentality that arisein each consciousness of a first jhŒna mind door process he thendiscerns the common characteristic of all mentality which is theircharacteristic of bending <strong>to</strong>wards and sticking <strong>to</strong> an object. <strong>The</strong>n hesimply discerns all the 34 types of mentality present in the first jhŒnaas mentality (nŒma).After that the medita<strong>to</strong>r performs the same type of discernmentand analysis of mentality of the second, third, and fourth jhŒna ofmindfulness of breathing and also of any other jhŒnas that he isable <strong>to</strong> attain using other meditation subjects. For example, repulsivenessof the body, white kasiöa, lovingkindness etc.<strong>The</strong>n after that the medita<strong>to</strong>r discerns the different types of mentalitythat occur when a wholesome mind door thought process ofthe sensual plane occurs (kŒmŒvacara kusala mano dvŒra v´thi).w 13
