w 8meditation subjects easily with the assistance of the concentrationhe has attained in his initial meditation.Developing InsightAfter the meditator has thus completed the development of concentrationhis mind is then pliant, usable and ready to begin the developmentof insight practise. If he developed his concentration by using mindfulness of breathingthen he again develops that concentration as described above. He attains the fourth jhŒna based on mindfulness of breathing, thendiscerns the 32 parts of the body a few times internally and externally, then using the white colour of the bones he progressively entersthe fourth jhŒna based on the white kasiöa. Then he directs hismind towards the discernment of the four elements in the body.As described above he develops concentration based on the fourelements until he finds his whole body appears to be white. Then ashe continues to discern the four elements in the white form of thebody his whole body becomes clear like a block of ice.The meditator then continues to discern the four elements in theclear form of his body and as he does this he will find that it breaksup into tiny particles. If it does not break up into particles while he ismeditating in this way then he directs his attention to discerning theelement of space in the body. He finds that there are spaces all overthe body such as the pores in the skin and as he discerns these spacesthe clear form breaks up into particles because he is able to discernthe space between particles. When he is able to easily discern these particles, which are calledrèpa kalŒpas, he will notice at first that they are arising and passingaway very quickly. He should not pay much attention to them arisingand passing away, but just continue to observe the four elementsin each rèpa kalŒpa.
