<strong>Athletics</strong> <strong>Graphics</strong> <strong>Standards</strong> <strong>Manual</strong>IntroductionBuilding a winning tradition in NCAA Division I is agoal that is well in hand for <strong>Winthrop</strong>’s athletics program.Coming off a number of Big South Championships, the Eaglesare poised for the next level of competition and eagerly awaitadditional chances to shine in division play. As the quality of<strong>Winthrop</strong>’s athletics program has improved in recent years, sotoo has the attention paid to the graphics that represent theprogram. So much attention has been focused, in fact, that theuniversity, in 2000, expanded the approved logos and logotypein order to meet increased needs in the athletics departmentand community.As symbols of a winning athletics program, the logosand logotype must be used appropriately in both printedand electronic publications. When used correctly, the result isstrong, consistent graphics that inspire confidence in playersand staff and enhance the reputation of the program andthe institution.This graphic standards manual outlines how and whenathletics department staff, merchandising and printing vendors,and the media may use the <strong>Winthrop</strong> athletics logos andlogotype in publication. This manual covers most, but not all,examples of acceptable usage. For clarification on theappropriateness of other usages, please consult the athleticsdirector or the Office of <strong>University</strong> Relations.1NoteThe information contained in this manual is intended asa guide to the graphic standards followed by the <strong>Winthrop</strong><strong>University</strong> <strong>Athletics</strong> Department and the Office of <strong>University</strong>Relations. Graphic <strong>Standards</strong> PolicyAll material printed or produced by the <strong>Winthrop</strong> <strong>University</strong> Departmentof <strong>Athletics</strong>, or in the name of <strong>Winthrop</strong> <strong>University</strong> Eagles, will adhere to theguidelines of the <strong>Winthrop</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Athletics</strong> <strong>Graphics</strong> <strong>Standards</strong> <strong>Manual</strong>.Extra copies of the manual are available from the Department of <strong>Athletics</strong>, oryou may print the electronic version of the manual found at the Department of<strong>Athletics</strong> Web page, www.winthropeagles.com.<strong>Winthrop</strong> <strong>University</strong>Athletic LogoThe <strong>Winthrop</strong> <strong>University</strong> athletic logos incorporate theoutline of an eagle’ s head within the words “W inthrop” or“<strong>Winthrop</strong> Eagles.” For the vast majority of applications, oneof the logos at right should be used.Eagle Word LogoHorizontal Eagle LogoStacked Eagle LogoThe following variations are permissible, but reservedfor specialty applications. Their use should be approved inadvance by the athletic director or the Of fice of <strong>University</strong>Relations.Go Eagles LogoEagle Head LogoEagle Head with Words LogoThe <strong>Winthrop</strong> <strong>University</strong> athletic logos are registered andfully protected trademarks. As such, the logos must only beused for approved purposes, and cannot be modified in anyway without approval. To prevent the proliferation ofunauthorized versions of the logos, as well as inappropriateapplications, all vendors requesting an electronic transfer ofa logo will be required to sign a statement prohibiting thevendor from any unauthorized reproduction of the logo. Forthe same reason, scanning the logos, whether using approvedversions or previously printed materials, is also prohibited.Copies of the oficial logos will only be available for approveduses from the Department of <strong>Athletics</strong> or Printing Services.LicensingMembers of the external community or vendors who wishto use a logo on merchandise intended for resale must followthe provisions of the current, of ficial institutional licensingagreement. <strong>Athletics</strong> <strong>Graphics</strong> <strong>Standards</strong> <strong>Manual</strong>GuidelinesTo assure that the logos are used correctly, the following guidelines havebeen established. Exceptions to the rules outlined below require approval ofthe Office of <strong>University</strong> Relations.Authorized LogoThe official <strong>Winthrop</strong> <strong>University</strong> athletic logo, combiningeagle head and lettering, is preferred for most standard usages.The logo must be reproduced using authorized, camera-readycopies or “slicks” obtained from Printing Services or theathletic director. Reproduction andMinimum SizeWhenever possible, the logo should be used in one of thestandard sizes as described in this manual. The logo must neverbe reproduced smaller than the minimum size. Special artwork forthis usage has been created so that the eagle head will alwaysbe easily distinguishable. Protected AreaWhen using the logo, it is important that the areaimmediately surrounding the logo remain free of type or othergraphics, so that nothing competes with the logo itself. Therule of thumb for determining the required protected area inrelation to the size of the logo is as follows: If x = 80 percentof height of logo words (not including outline), then theprotected areas on the left and right sides of the logo are alsox. In the same example, if y = height of logo words (notincluding outline), then the protected areas above and belowthe logo are also y.Angle of ReproductionUnder normal circumstances, the logo will not be printedat an angle other than horizontal. These designs combine the logos with athleticdepartment sub-unit names for cohesive presentation. Otherapproved formats which follow include designs for athleticdepartment business cards, letterhead and envelopes. Questionsregarding these formats should be directed to the <strong>Athletics</strong>Director or Office of <strong>University</strong> Relations. Business Card FormatsTwo versions of the oficial <strong>Winthrop</strong> <strong>University</strong> AthelticDepartment business card are available. The horizontal formatuses the official authorized version of the logo and allows forsix lines of information. The vertical version, created toaccommodate staff members with longer titles and/or morecontact information, features the stacked version of the logoand allows for up to nine lines of information. Staff membersshould limit the information on their business cards to thatpertaining to their o ficial positions with <strong>Winthrop</strong> <strong>University</strong>.Home phone numbers are allowed. <strong>Athletics</strong> <strong>Graphics</strong> <strong>Standards</strong> <strong>Manual</strong>Letter FormattingThe professional impact of the athletics department’ sletterhead and envelopes can be greatly enhanced by formattingletters with appropriate alignment, spacing and typefaces. Tomaximize the impact of university correspondence, all letterson <strong>Winthrop</strong> athletics letterhead should be left justified andblock formatted (no paragraph indentations). Also, thepreferable typeface for letters is Times or Times Roman. IfTimes is not available, use another readable serif type. Sansserif type such as Arial is dif ficult to read and should beavoided. Follow the margins shown below.9shown at 67%of original size


Unacceptable UsageFor consistency, the <strong>Winthrop</strong> <strong>University</strong> athletic logomust be used as presented in this manual. To assist in avoidingmisuse, the following illustrations show some variations ofthe logo that are not permitted:1. The logo should never be reproduced from a Web site orpreviously printed publication.2. The logo cannot be redrawn, re-set, re-proportioned ordistorted, nor can it be printed from an unapproved orunenhanced electronic output (for example, laser printer, faxor copy machine).3. The logo should never be printed within a border or othertype of artwork.4. To ensure legibility, the logo is best used on a solid background,rather than over-printed on a photograph, on a heavilytextured design or on top of other words.5. The logo cannot be substituted for the words “W inthropEagles” in a publication’s title; nor can it be used as the subject“<strong>Winthrop</strong> Eagles” in a sentence, tag line or slogan.6. The words “W inthrop Eagles” cannot be set in anothertypeface and used in place of the official logotype.7. The eagle head should not be reversed; the head must appearto be looking right.8. Colors should be printed exactly as shown in the colorbreaks, or as necessary to comply with NCAA regulations.9.
